The Murray Bushrangers went down in the 2003 TAC Cup Grand Final in disappointing circumstances being comprehensively defeated by 92 points by an awesome Calder Cannons outfit. In what started as an overcast day and ended up being one of the coldest days of the year the Bushrangers were beaten from start to finish. In the first term the Bushrangers were given limited opportunites to score due to relentless pressure from the Cannons and which they found opportunites to score six goals to the Bushrangers nil. The second term was much the same and when the rain set in it spelt trouble for the Bushrangers still only able to manage one point as the Cannons piled on a further four goals. The second half was not much better for the Bushrangers but to their credit the Murray boys fought out the game to the final siren managing to score two goals in the final term and add some respectability to the score board. The Bushrangers best for the Grand Final was co-captain Will Gayfer who lead from the front and never gave in despite the constant pressure from Calder all over the ground. Sixteen year old Marcus Drum showed why he will be a player to watch constantly backing into packs and tried to conjure up forward bursts despite minimal support up field. Luke Taylor continued his strong form fro the backline keeping a cool head many times while under pressure and repelled the ball numerous times from the defensive 50. Young gun Brett Deledio tried his best to pull some magic out of the hat pushing the ball forward numerous times with little avail. While back-pocket dynamo Ben Aalbers kept up his strong form from the latter part of the year and gave the Bushrangers a real spark when thrown onto the ball. Overall year 2003 has been a sensational from the Bushrangers point of view and all players and parents involved should be proud that a grand final showing in such a powerful competition is something to remember.
