Sydney AFL clashing with Swans & GWS games

Just a question guys... Why are they scheduling games when the Swannies are playing etc? This weekend for example, Sunday would have been a better day?

Not wrong - Ive lost one of our best midfielders as he is selected to help unveil the flag.

Moved from the tipping thread - this issue is worthy of its own thread.

I agree that the clashes with the AFL are an issue - particularly with GWS.
I wrote to Andrew Demetriou on the issue last year, asking him to never schedule AFL games in Sydney before 6pm on a Saturday; got a letter back with glib cliches about taking the views of fans into account. He then put the "floating" last round game between GWS & North Melbourne up against our qualifying final; and there's several clashes this season. So much for Demetriou taking the wishes of fans into account.....
I'll have another go at writing to Demetriou this year.

Many of the grounds are booked for the junior associations on Sunday so aren't available. In contrast, Henson is usually only available on Sundays because of rugby league - so Balmain play most of their home games on Sundays.

But it's annoying when it happens. And that when the Swans are unfurling their premiership flag on Saturday, the most hard-core footy people in Sydney won't be there.

That's exactly it. Clubs lose players, and particularly lose volunteers, when local clubs clash with Swans & GWS home games.

When clubs are already stretched for volunteers, particularly on weeks when they are split over several grounds, it makes it even harder when there's a Swans or Giants home game on at the same time.

I don't think they are interested in the Sydney AFL crowd, despite the fact they go to AFL matches and drink a lot of beer.
Probably more alignment with juniors/auskickers...where mum and dad have to take them plus the rest of the family and spend money on pies, chips, lollies etc that are almost as dear as the beer.

They don't care about Senior footy. I had a crack at GWS last year when they scheduled games against us. It's the footy players that will get a group of mates together and head to the footy, spending at least $100 a piece......not kids. Stupid kids.

Sydney AFL clashing with Swans & GWS games

Thanks for the replies. My local club are The East Coast Eagles with their home ground being 5 minutes away. I would go and support the club more often, however, the Swannies for me are my priority. So when they are scheduled at the same or similar times, the Swannies will always win out. I guess it has now got even harder with GWS and a game in Sydney most weekends.

Check your FOXTEL guide ... that will tell you why where and when Swans and GWS play ... there are no other considerations.

The only thing that the AFL staffers are concerned about is keeping their jobs, and you can't do that if you allow an independent, sensible, considered thought to enter your mind!!

If you are naive enough to think that there is anyone involved at the AFL who gives a flying frig about the participants in the code in Sydney at any level, I've got a freshly painted bridge you may be interested in making an off on ... currently owned by the Sydney Swans!
