Matt80, one could argue the toss about a couple of those assessments but the one I disagree with most is Lewis Jetta. He is a much more rounded footballer these days; he can still be on hand for the slingshot as he showed on Friday night, but his main job these days is delivering the ball into the forward 50 and he must be one of the best in the AFL at this vital skill. In addition his body strength has built up and he has become a pretty formidable tackler, not quite in Gary Rohan's crash-and-burn style, but quite effective. He is a noticeably better player than in 2012.
A Hawthorn comparison would be interesting; some of the aging bodies still have a bit to give.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
As requested here is an analysis of the Hawks teams between 2012 - 2014. I've included Cyril for the 2014 team:
Birchill - Neutral
Gibson - Slightly better
Stratton - Neutral
Suckling - Slightly better
Shoenmakers / Lake - Much better
Burgoyne - Neutral
Lewis - Slightly better
Mitchell - Neutral
Ellis / Hill - Slightly better
Gunston - Slightly better
Franklin / Celgar - Much worse
Smith - Slightly better
Rioli - Slightly worse
Roughead - Slightly better
Bruest - Slightly better
Hale - Neutral
Hodge - Neutral
Sewell / Langford - Slightly worse
Young / Duryea - Neutral
Shiels - Slightly better
Pupolo - Slightly better
Savage / Simpkin - Neutral
Much better = 1
Slightly better = 10
Neutral = 8
Slightly worse = 2
Much worse = 1
They have a slightly better differential of plus 8.
This analysis has led me to believe that the Hawks like the Swans are a better team than 2012. They have a lot of improvement from Smith, Hill, Suckling, Bruest, Gunston and Poppy. Their veterans such as Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne and Lewis have maintained their 2012 levels and they have added a much better Footballer in Brian Lake.
The reason that one team is the favourite and not the other is Buddy Franklin. If he was in a Hawks jersey they would be huge favourites.
If the Swans win this game, then the 2014 premiership should be recognised as Andrew Ireland's premiership.
Not so. If the Hawks had finished top of the ladder then demolished their opponents the way the Swans did all over the ground, while the Swans just scrapped through the PF then the Hawks would be rightful favourites.
You seem to confuse media reports (and reporters) for the real world.
Matt interesting perspective however it's just your subjective analysis. Entertaining nonetheless.
Lance is a factor but if he was still at Hawthorn would he have had the same impact for them that he has had for us this year?
