According to one of the footy shows this morning Tom Mitchell has set a new record for a number of possessions in a season, with still more to come. Ouch!
If Macca gets to 300 this year he will give it away. If he doesn't I think the club will sign him on a much lesser contract. Plays his 300th next year and plays out the year in the 2's loses form. The HS had him the best on Friday but I thought he struggled when he went forward.
I think Lachie Neale set a new record last season, so in some ways it just reflects the higher possession way football is trending.
Part of (I think the main) reason why Mitchell left us is that he was promised he'd been played as a full time onballer at Hawthorn. At Sydney, he was often forced to a half-forward flank, or a wing, because there wasn't a role for another slowish man in the true midfield, not for the entirety of a game. I don't think that's changed. With a full complement of Parker, Kennedy and Hannebery available, our midfield rotations are better suited by rotating a different kind of player - a Jack, Heeney, Jones or even Papley - through there.
Mitchell has clearly made the Hawks a better side but I don't think his departure has really hurt the Swans.
Well, shut my mouth!
Mitchell is having a great season but he is the main (nearly the only) man in their midfield and plays high minutes. Wouldn't have set the record here but good luck to him at Hawthorn, I feel they are in for a lengthy period down the table, no draft picks of note this year, ageing and retiring stars, no longer a destination club.
As good as Macca's playing now, he was probably going to be in and out of our team next year anyway and whose to say he won't return to us down the track, a la Kirk......but if this rumour is true, it will be awkward seeing him play for someone else, especially if he keeps playing as well as he is now.
