    Our emergencies are interesting:

    EMERGENCIES

    36 Aliir Aliir
    19 Matthew Ling
    30 Tom McCartin
    27 Daniel Robinson

Our two young recruits Ling and McCartin seem to edging closer to a first game.

You would image that they would come in over Robbo.

I doubt that. Robinson is clearly the most AFL ready of the four, taking into account Aliir's fitness and recent match practice. He'd still come in if they need a tall but otherwise, if anyone actually is expected to miss, I'd expect Robinson to come into the team. Ling missed a chunk of the late pre-season and early season proper, and was mediocre in last week's NEAFL game. McCartin started last week very well but faded as the game went on. I question whether he's physically ready (or close to ready) to play a senior game.

The four named emergencies don't mean a whole amount. They seem to rotate them around the younger and fringe players. But if they don't actually expect to need to call on an emergency (ie if no-one is in doubt), they sometimes give a younger player the chance to prepare and warm-up with the senior team, just for the experience.

Interesting comments from Horse on some of the missing players: Key quotes: John Longmire - sydneyswans.com.au

    Aliir Aliirs progress
Hes coming along well. Last week was his second game in about nine weeks, so it was good to get another game under his belt. He played that forward-ruck role for us in the reserves. His second half was certainly pretty solid. So wed like to give him a look at that space in our senior team and at some stage pretty shortly. We think he can contribute in that area.

    Nic Newmans progress
He doesnt have an injury he was our travelling emergency for the NEAFL side on the weekend. Its always a bit of a mix trying to get the balance right. As others have, hes got a bit to work on. Ollie Florent has stepped up in that midfield role and thats what happens it ebbs and flows a bit. But were confident he can really contribute to our team as well and he was close last week and hell be close again this week.

Ludwig would be very excited by some of that

Waite out is an odd one. Niggling injury perhaps? Good for us anyway......

Stoddart obviously not setting the two's alight then......after being touted pre season as a possible bolter.

Young players rarely feature in their first year unless they are standouts (Heeney, Mills) or playing a level above in the NEAFL (Papley). These young outside types are fairly light for the hard hitting senior grind. Plenty of time for them to become regulars.

True; but I'm not sure that Papley has ever played in the NEAFL? He might have played one or two games when returning from injury, but if I remember rightly, he was so surprisingly good in his first preseason, that he was selected for the firsts straight away?

I actually liked Alliir's potential as a forward in that game vs. Western at Etihad. It seemed clear to me that we wasn't comfortable yet but I thought his skills could lend itself to that role when he gets more used to that role.

I doubt that Ling or McCartin will be at the front of the emergency line, however, the fact that two first year recruits, one of which is a key forward is is in itself remarkable. Our future is looking bright. We got two bargains there.
