Thread: The AFL - a national competition? (split thread)

Heard an idea voiced on TV (can't remember who by) that the MCG should be configured to the dimensions of the higher finishing team in the GF.

So that would mean if Geelong finished 2 and the Vic team finished 3 the MCG on GF day should be configured to the same dimensions as GMHBA statium.

    Not a bad idea.

Using Eddie's logic, the swans should have played themselves in the GF because they had beaten WCE and the pies!

Even if it's configured to random dimensions would be a good enough option.,
    Best realistic solution I've heard

As long as you have a huge proportion of the ground filled with MCC and AFL members it doesn't matter what else you do, the crowd and atmosphere will almost certainly favour Victorian teams on the day. I certainly don't favour a best of three series, even the US doesn't do that for their football code. Nothing is going to change considering the length of the deal but the ideal thing to do would be for the game to rotate around different cities depending on who bids for it in certain years, such as is done with the Superbowl and the UEFA Champions League finals. It's a Grand Final so it will fill no matter where it's held.

MCG home state advantage is also reflected by the umps free kick count. Last 5 granny's

    WC: 13 Coll: 17
    Adel:.19 Rich: 24
    Syd: 8. W.B. 20
    WC 13. Hawthorn 14.
    Syd 18 hawthorn 18.

Non Vic team didn't win a single free kick count and if even the 2014 thrashing was even.

    Vic teams: 93.
    Non Vic teams:71

30% free kick advantage given to Vic's at MCG.

Whilst we won it in 2012, pretty sure Hawks won free count handily

The grand old.lady of Australian sport (ANZ stadium) is again showing it can host a grand final just fine.

A raw free kick count is a very shallow analysis that tells you nothing.

One game maybe, multiple games it tells you everything.

No it doesn't. It still tells you nothing. It presumes that free kicks should be even to be fair, which is a silly concept.

Liz, being the professor of popular opinions on here doesn't make you right all the time.
Over a long period, free kicks should even out.
Fact. The Vic teams have the home crowd advantage in grand finals.
Fact. Crowds influence umpires. Perth, Adelaide, anywhere.
Fact. It's very unlikely that 5 games in a row would have the same lopsided free kick counts.
