2024: 150 years of the Swans

Next year will see 150 years of the Swans as an entity.

What will the club do to recognise/acknowledge it?

I’d love to see the club pick a “Team of the Century and a Half”. Some recent players would be worthy.

I’d love to see us wear a different heritage jumper for every Melbourne away game … every jumper that the club has worn as South Melbourne (even that orange one we wore against South Fremantle in the 1979 Escort Cup night series … maybe we could wear it in a Friday night game against Freo?). I’d buy every replica heritage jumper they put out!

We haven’t had a Swan autobiography/biography in a while, and In the Blood could use a little updating.

A jumper with every VFA, VFL, AFL Swans player/coach name on it?

Try to gather every living Swan to the SCG?

A big ask, but a team portrait featuring every Swan. That would be hard as I doubt there would be many images of players from 1874, but imagine what it would look like!

Movie length documentary detailing the proud history (significant events, players etc) of the club from inception?

Other than that, some great initial thoughts goswannies. I'll be really keen to see what the club does to celebrate as well - a big milestone for a proud club with a great shared history between two cities.

Buddy, Goodes, Mickey O and Jude Bolton would all have to come into contention.
But we’ve been blessed with some mighty players this century.

I would like us to play on the Norwood Ground in Gather Round (as the stand resembles so much to the Lakeside Oval stand), playing night game in the Red V jumper against either Melbourne (who we played in our first VFL match in 1897) or Brisbane in the original Fitzroy Maroon jumper with the white ensigina.

Playing on the Lakeside Oval i imagine would not be feasible due to it's current soccer/Athletics configuration, but nice to have some 150th celebrations held there and training runs (which they've done previously).

Without meaning to derail thread, I did find RNR's validation convincing on this board several years ago, that the club was truly formed 7 years earlier in 1867. Nevertheless not being too hanged up about that and looking forward to our "official" 150th next year. As MCS pointed out.....winning the flag would be ultimate!

Don’t get me wrong, I am sure 2024 will be celebrated, but it is not the sesquicentenary of the Swans as an entity.

Apologies. I guess I should have titled the thread Officially Club Endorsed 150th Celebrations which is probably and realistically the only thing that counts for most supporters and merchandise produced, regardless of any contrary viewpoints or evidence, no matter how compelling

I think the real impetus for the celebration (other than the natural desire to celebrate) is that the club started putting 1874 on their jumpers - and once you've made such a public commitment like that there's no going back on that - regardless of the facts.
I sincerely hope the marketing department do pull their fingers out for next year - in part to make up for their faiilure 6 years ago, but mainly because I like celebrations.

That’s probably true, to a large degree, but South Melbourne did publicly celebrate 1924 as its 50th season, in retrospect, in early 1925. So they have been honouring 1874 for nearly a century.

Although I do agree that they are certainly older than this date, as you have pointed out before.
