Fantastic Player review in the HUN!

[sharp9]

Strange but true...a Herald Sun reporter has produced a player review which actually indicates that he has watched some matched not featuring Richmond or Collingwood! He mentions Swans players just when you would expect a neutral observer to. What is going on? Who is this bloke? Here is the article....

Thanks Sharp9

That was great, I enjoyed that.

Yeah - that was excellent - our players mentioned in all the right spots!!

[Bron]

Totally agree ... very nice to read that ... thanks for the link

The most pleasing aspect when I read that this morning was seeing Schneides included as one of 5 rookies... along with players such as Ball, Goddard, Polak and Wells... the kind of guys that just role off the tongue whenever you talk about top rookies.

Goddard: Pick 1
Ball: Pick 2
Wells: Pick 2
Polak: Pick 4
Schneider: Pick 60

Spot the difference!

No one did better than Collingwood. Richard Cole at 11 Mark McGough at 43

Reporter Scott Gullen picked us for the wooden spoon and is a very poor last in the tipping in the Herald Sun, mainly because he rarely picks us.

A fair turn around would say with this article. Be interesting if he puts his tipping where his pen is in the second half.

LOL! u got me another one! might have something to do with the hour

imagine our two brightest stars (potentially) being AG (pick 40 odd) and AS (pick 60)!!! oh the irony... oh and remember we got to hit bottom before we get to the top

That was a great article. I actually read it in the Herald Sun yesterday and thought it was quite good then, especially in the fact that there was a Swans player in each of the segments except the one in which you would hate! I found it very interesting that the other four rookies were picked up between 1st and 4th in their drafts while our Schneiderman was draft pick no. 60. Also, it's interesting that Goodes was picked up as no. 40 and now he is a major Bronlow contender. It just goes to show that there are real gems in the draft that go unnoticed until the later rounds and that Sydney is definitely doing something right in recruiting.

Goodes was best on the ground in the under 18's Grand Final so he was hardly not known about. The other teams obviously must didn't rate him.

Must have got there advice the same place the "experts" who tipped the Swans for the spoon did

He hadn't been playing AFL for very long and so didn't have a huge track record for them to go on. Also I doubt (hope) that professional recruiters place much of their assessment on a single match - they look far more for what they think a player is capable of becoming rather than what he can do at the age of 18 in a one-off game.

As has been noted before, in the year when Goodes was recruited clubs were only allowed to pick on 17 year old per year (rule subsequently changed). One of the reasons he lasted so long was that all other clubs (other than the Eagles, I believe) had already taken a 17 yo and thus couldn't pick Goodes. It probably contributed to why he lasted until 43. Mind you, it would be interesting to see a list of the other 17yos picked ahead of him to see how they have developed since.

One thing you can say for the Swans in recent years is that they haven't been scared to take players with little or no background in the game and these "gambles" look to have been good ones- Goodes, Tiger, LRT.

He also had a reputation as an undisciplined lair. Although he kicked a bag in that U18 Grand Final, he also strutted around like he owned the MCG, which probably didn't endear him to the "spotters".

Mind you, I loved it . . . he was a real showman even then.

Apparently they didn't see much more improvement in him.
Thats what I was told ...
