Kennelly may miss out again in International Rules

    15/10/2004 - 00:44:08

AFL star Tadgh Kennelly is Ireland?s only injury worry ahead of Sunday?s first International Rules test against Australia at Croke Park.

The former Kerry underage star, who now plays Aussie Rules with Sydney Swans, has picked up a lower back injury, but has continued training with the Irish squad.

He stepped out for his club Listowel Emmets in Saturday?s ill-tempered Kerry SFC quarter-final against An Ghaeltacht.

Kennelly missed last year?s tests through injury

Well, I enjoyed the game. It's 3:30, I'm exhausted, but a touch too excited to sleep.

The Aussie's played shockingly. Their use of the round ball obviously their key disadvantage. However, I felt the umpires were a bit soft on some of the calls to do with the physicality of the Aussie team, which deprived them of their real advantage. Nathan Brown was the top scorer of the match with a goal, three overs, and two behinds. Riewoldt played awfully, which satisfied my vengeful streak.

Irish were very good. They weren't as afraid of the Aussies as in years gone by. I sincerley doubt the Aussies can get the cup from here.

Tadhg was, to my mind, the standout Swan (no suprises there), and Crouch went of early in the first. Tadhg got two overs and a behind, and was deprived an over (though it may have been a goal if the whistle hadn't distracted him) after taking too many bounces. They interviewed him after the game and my goodness his accent is stronger. Kirk was also impressive, as ever, and was my pick for second-best-Swan.

Hopefully Jude and Crouchie will both be able to play the next game, and we'll see a full compliment of Swans.

That's it from me. I'm going to sleep,
        Erin

I thought Kirk was probably the best Swan - not spectacular but very steady and almost never wasted the ball, unlike most of his Australian team mates.

Tadhg showed glimpses but didn't get into the play that much. I think he may have spent quite a lot of time off the ground, which, if he was carrying an injury, is understandable. The two overs he kicked were very nice though - great long kicks.

The second over was awesome. Shades of this year's Collingwood game.

            (I can't sleep)

              Hi

I agree with your assessments of the Swans players. Kirk really showed why he is able to step up a level each year. His hands were quick and he was the only player at times runnung the ball out of defence without wasting it.

The Essendon players (excepting James) kept up the the fact that they are the common denominator in rough stuff. McVeigh was an embarrassment.

We are on daylight saving here so it didn't start till 2.30. I couldn't get back to sleep after and next thing I know my neighbour is knocking on my window for our morning walk, and there is "snow in back" as the locals say. What astart to the week!!!!

Crouchy's getting soft. Fancy going off just because he broke his collarbone...

Broken Collar Bones can be up to 6 weeks, normally a bit shorter.

However, it has been reported that surgery is required - and that is only rquired if the bone end breaks through the skin or if the bone is displaced and pressing on a nerve or blood vessel. The fracture is usually fixed with a plate and screws.

This may mean he is out for a few months and in a bit of pain (my father had this a few times while playing football, however since the late 80's medicine has improved!) and it could mean he wouldn't start his pre season until next year.

IMO riewoldt didnt play that badly, it was mcphee who was absolutely SHOCKING! and well, they look the same! you couldnt really blame riewoldt that much as the service forward was pretty bad.

they need aussie umps too, as soon as a finger is layed on an irish player the irish ump would call push in the back

You should have heard me when I came back from a year in Canada. "How yer doing eh?" I shudder to think about what LesCygnes accent is going to be like when (er, if) we ever gets back here.

I used to work with heaps of English backpackers. I'm such a linguist that I'd start subconsciously mimicking the sounds they'd make. After a couple of weeks I'd be saying things like "You what?" "Yer know wot I meee-yun?"

I met a Swiss girl once. She learnt her English in Glasgow. Was the funniest thing I ever heard. Schwyzer Schottisch!
