Umpiring Standards in the SFL

@@@@ decisions are one thing, happens in every game ever and can't be changed... but it's when there's a lot of cheap shots and the like and an umpire can't take control properly until it ends in an all in brawl (esp at lower levels) is a much bigger worry for mine.

You obviously missed the Saints North Grand Final a couple of years ago - the SFL still has a fair few thugs running around and is a mile behind the standard of the VFL, SANFL and WAFL. Its going to take a lot more than removing the red card system to improve the standard up here.

Every other state comp in Australia (eg SANFL, VFL, WAFL, QAFL) does not have the card system - it is only used in lower leagues where the thugs actually play.

If we are serious about professionalism of the comp then it should be the same. And if players do get reported then the tribunal sentences should be harsh to help strengthen the point.

Your right Coastal, it would be a step back to the dark ages but i honestly dont think footy is like that anymore here.

Can you remember the 1991 GF between Parra and Norths, i think it ended up 14 on 13.

why is it the sydney afl still has the red and yellow card options? it is a very grey part of the game, too subjective, as some weeks they are haded out easily the following similar offences get nothing.

If there's 2 players going at it, they usually let them go. Third man in is the one that makes it escalate - that's who they would normally look to report or sin-bin.

As usual my understanding of decisions made by the jaffa's is a bit vague at times but how does a person become the only person reported in a melee?

Am i correct that it takes 4 players to consitute a melee? Surely then you would expect at least two players reported?

Yes umpires may be inconsistent ... but players are too ... why does a player take a screamer one minute only to drop a simple mark or kick it out on the full the next? The very best players do make mistakes and don't get dropped or dragged ... so why should umpires be dropped if they do something wrong? they are only human like the rest of us & should be applauded for having a go & ensuring a game of footy each week.

I suggest that you try & umpire a game and you will quickly realise that you are making some calls during a match that could go either way. It is not an easy task let me tell you.

I have umpired a number of games this year so I think Im allowed to have an opinion on the general incompetence we see week in week out.

rafters obviously umpires are going to make mistakes the same as players
i dont think anyone would ever dispute this

the problem is with the level of mistakes, the inconsistency of umpires, the inconsistency from week to week and the inconsistency between all the umpires on the field.

every umpire in the SFL seems to have their own rules that they take care of and don't worry about the rest

rules change from week to week and team to team, teams are penalised for swearing under their breath for stuffing up and 50m is given, others get away with blatantly swearing at the umps and a soft warning is given only because players point it out.

the less they blow the whistle the less mistakes they can make
