General footy chat Grand Final 2026. Fremantle v Brisbane.

Hopefully for us neutrals, it will be a hard fought and gripping contest. I'd probably prefer not to hear sentences along the lines of, "Yeah, I quite liked Kylie, but the game was crap."

There seems to be two main schools of thought on how the game might go. Firstly, Fremantle will be a bit overawed and they'll bring their somewhat flaky recent form into the contest. Which will see them soundly beaten by a Brisbane side, which has a reputation for turning it on when it really matters. Or secondly, Fremantle has been the best side all year, and with the motivation of a first ever flag, they'll be able to grind out a tough win.

I'm certainly hoping for the latter. After being blessed by the F/S rule, I don't really want to see Brisbane get a threepeat. Plus a first Fremantle premiership has a certain amount of sentimental appeal. For that to happen though, they need to get on top in the clearances, so they'll need big games from at least some of Jackson, Serong, Brayshaw or Young. So for me, I'm going for a close Fremantle victory, with either Jackson or Serong to claim the Norm Smith.

Sad that we're not there but I take a lot of comfort in the fact that with our HUGE number of "outs" in our last 2 games, we flogged Brisbane and Freo outscored us in only 1 quarter.

Don't really care who wins but with Melbourne's weather today, we're unlikely to see a classic.

My head tells me Brisbane because of that fleet of small half forwards and they know what they’re doing, but I’m sick of them winning, they probably should have won in 23 but for a couple of dodgy late decisions, and their windows gonna be open for a while yet. And Freo’s fans have always been happy warriors, they’ve got some players that are terrific to watch, it’s hard not to admire their list build and I’ve felt all year their running power is the best in the comp. Oh, and I wife’s family is from Perth and all mad Docker fans, so I’d be ex communicated if I went the other day. So bring on the purple haze.

My only lament will be watching Hayden Young (who I personally wanted) and Serong remind us of the Dyl Stephens selection. Then again, the Matthew Ling one was even worse, so if Bailey cuts loose it’ll be even harder to watch.

Both teams should be reasonably happy with that quarter. Fremantle's pressure was perhaps a little bit better, but Brisbane probably looked more dangerous when they got in the clear.
