Talking to the recruiters prior to the draft, they were well aware of the interest from GWS and Hawthorn on Kyle and had decided under no circumstances would they let him slip through the draft.
All along they knew that if this occurred they would have to make difficult decisions, and when Carmichael came up not long after they chose to pass.
I am not saying that Carmichael is not a good player, but in this instance they got it right

It is worth noting that the anticipated bid on Max King did not come till very late, and this enabled the club to snare both Phillopou and Cootee
Right about now I bet you they wished they had matched that bid ! would be outstanding fill in for Blakley, I cant remember a single report that had Kyle ahead of Carmichael and watching him through the under 18s he was a standout I stand by my comments and firmly believe Carmichael will be the better player - that being said I am glad we have Kyle he has shown some glimpses enough that he may just make it but glimpses can be deceiving

Now that SDK is not one we targeted, maybe our target in the draft should be a KPD.
With a KPD added our list is stacked with talent and ready to launch next year.

callum Mills, Nick Blakey, Dane Rampe and Will Edwards are a loss even though Will may come back, I think he will be useful for half a season. If we let Tom do too much he may end up getting a concussion and we are then stuffed. We need to make sure he does his role a nothing more and provide him support through variety of players.
McCartin, Snell, Hamling, Melican and a new recruit should be good enough as a KPD list.

We may end up playing Will Green more frequently next year with McLean providing half the season with Green the other half. Our depth in KPF is a bit thin but I think we are still ok as we have a good bunch of small and medium forwards.

Yeah it’s such an interesting area to examine

ie our backline being stripped from 2026 and can we contain the best teams with what we have left ?

I’m not sure our baseline can unless we are super strong in the mids and forwards keeping control of the field position in these two areas

but that is not balanced and at the mercy of the best top4 teams who have a great balance between all 3 parts of the field

          …….

so u would guess that the coaching department is building on our emerging backline depth being able to contain the best teams in the comp in 2027 and maybe 2028 ?

Good luck to Carmichael and he’s likely to have an ok career, and if he wants to come home, even better. But there’s a reason Kyle got picked where he did and other Swans players rave about him. Game knows game.

Tom Mc can name his price, hope that gets done soon.

Here is hoping Snell and Riak come on as quick as Will, with or without Blakey we need another good tall.

Carmichael is a 185cm half back flanker, hardly a replacement for Blakey.
He may develop into a good player, but he certainly is not a key position defender.

Blakey is a general defender (rated #1 by champion data )not a Key defender and Carmichael is also a general defender and has strong running ability similar to Blakey

Couldn’t help but think of those classic lyrics from Fleetwood Mac’s song Dreams re Nick Blakey leaving and the twist is we have an absolute gun playing 12 games of AFL in his third season of learning to play footy !!! Harry “the natural” Kyle !!!!!

                    DREAMS

                    Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
                    But listen carefully
To the sound of your loneliness

…..Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
                    And what you lost
                    And what you had
                    Ooh, what you lost

                    bye bye Nick
                    hello Harry !!!!

How funny would it be if our young no32 decided to take jersey22 for the 2027 season and just murders it !!!!

                      I know Harry’s nickname is “H”

but he is truly a “natural born killer”

I just can’t believe it is his 3rd season of learning to play footy.

Not even Karmichael Hunt or Israel (absolute elite guns in another code and older) could make their first AFL season as good as “H”
