That is true at one level

equally it is true the impact of 4 players moving on end of 2019 and then our 16th place in 2020 was a tough year.

For me Grundy,Smith, McVeigh in particular departing our backline end of 2019, is very much like removing Rampe, Blakey, Mills, Cunnigham

It is very very difficult to bring in 3 or 4 defenders to replace the experience, connection, reliability and execution of such significant defenders.

Only Smith played a decent amount of games in his last year, we were transitioning that list.

Harry finished the year well but has only played 25 games in 2 yrs.
Rampe a great servant but age would have him lucky to play half a season.
Unfortunately playing without Mills isnt new to us
Blakey is a loss for sure

        The positives, touch wood

Gulden and JMac play a lot more which limits Blakeys loss
A few in the 2s step up as Defenders
Will comes back, no one could imagine the impact he had this year
We draft and play a 1st Rounder

It would be better if we were able to get games into players for a taste rather than needing them to perform without them having played

          There are possible scenarios

my concern is that it is quite inferior than loosing 4 seriously experienced players

totally get that on the SCG Gulden can float back thru the HBF and does that well. Lloyd and Robert’s are handy HBF ball movers

McInerney same heights etc as Mills but plays a very different role to Mills

Rampe and Blakey will not be replaced easily at all which is a massive gap

would it be fair to say that Barass, Sicily and Battle would walk into our 2027 back line ? Ie 3 very important defenders for the Hawks?

this is my concern. Not covering with half ready replacements but being a country mile behind the best defensive teams in the comp. Hawks, Geelong, Freeo, Brisbane.

You’re spot on Auntie- we can only hope that what our kids lack in experience will be made up for to some degree by their enthusiasm. I understand Ramps and Harry as time has called it a day for them, but I’m still disappointed by Blakey’s decision to join Norf. The reality is that money talks and we couldn’t match their offer. If he was in the room with the other lads, no way he can have any sour grapes with the club- this is just being dishonest. Just say “ they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse!” and we would understand!

Only Hawks have tall defenders depth

If Freo lose Pearce, Geelong lose Stewart or even Brissy lose Andrews they are all in the same boat as us with Tom Mc

No team in the comp has that dethat interesting to see if we chase a mature age after the draft

Would be great if we could get one! Who is available? Do we use our early pick for KPD? Or do we split it as we seem to do better with later picks? I would rather use it and draft the best defender available.

I’m dont agree……far superior backlines with primarily talls and mediums who can play tall in the rotation and “experienced” ie not bringing into 2027 two or three inexperienced tall mediums

what team lists are u looking at UUaswan ?

                    FREEO

                    McDonald

                    Pearce

                    Chapman

                    Ryan

                    Young

                    CATS

                    O’Sullivan

                    De Koning

                    Stewart

                    Guthrie

                    Henry

                    O’Connor

And now new recruit mobile Marshall will flourish in the ruck and dropping back into hole in defence for the Cats

Take Pearce and Stewart out of them sides and they thin out like us.

I get they have a bit more but its not that dire.

As a supporting cast, Id take Wicks as a small over any of them and Edwards as a 2nd tall over any outside of Andrews and Pearce

We seem to be discussing different ways at looking at our backline problem

I don’t agree re take one player from the top4 teams backline out and they are as thin as us ??

we will need to bring in Melican and or Hambling in the absence of 4 very experienced backs not available in 2027 and or two others that have not played AFL. Edwards is no where near the level of scramble, counter attack when rolling off the scrap to keep the ball moving fast by hand. Rampe, Blakey, Mills and Cunningham are so far ahead of all 3 above re absorbing pressure and countering.

what other top 4 or even top6 team does Melican or Hambling slot into ? They don’t. What about Edwards?

I just can find a player in the top 4 backline that I would replace with Melican, Hambling nor Edwards.

then additionally none of the teams top4 need to add in two rookies all at the same time ( in the same season ) while loosing 4 very experienced consistent backline custodians.

i genuinely struggle to see how that seismic shift won’t reduce our competitiveness to stay with the top4

that will probably do me……..cause it all comes to pass in Feb March

im just super concerned we have fallen away significantly in the backline vs our competition …….and it is a bigger gap to cover for 2027 and maybe 2028 also which is a shame given we are in a window

Just my opinion but Freo finished 2 games clear

                            Pearce - Tom Mc
                            Oscar - Will, Melican, Hamling
Ryan - Freo fans dont want him, he is a blackhole
                            Young - Gulden/Jmac
                            Chapman - Wicks

I get that as a collective they work well together but missing a key piece we are not far from the same boat.
Just look at Pearce GF day

Over thinking it mate, All teams go through period of change, looking at other teams and thinking they have it better etc doesnt do you any good. Look at Edwards he came it and you think he had played 100 games - personally cant wait to see what the new players bring to the table
