If Bevan is the most likely to come into the seniors, then we have more trouble with our depth than I thought...Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Bevan deservedly came fourth in the Rising Star award in his first season. He didn't have a great year last year, granted, but nor did Schneider in his second senior year.
Bevan played a very good first half a few weeks ago, before being rested as an emergency, and was good again tonight. Unless you've watched him play this year, wouldn't it be better not to comment?Comment

I'm basing it on his seniors performance of last year. I haven't seen him play seniors yet this year and I really don't see that reserves form actually means a lot.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Shold be interesting to see, probably more of a test than the ACTAFL.Originally posted by ugg
Glenn: I believe they've arranged for the reserves to play a SFL select side next week (AFL Canberra bye week). It should be interesting to see what the result of that game is.Premiers 09,18,33,05

While completely discounting what he showed he could do in 2004?Originally posted by NMWBloods

You can discount reserves performances if you like, but how on earth else are the club to determine who to promote, if anyone, other than by judging relative performance in the seconds. Apparently good reserves performances are enough to warrant call-ups on here for Willoughby to play. Bevan is well ahead of him on performance at the moment, and probably at least level with Schmidt and Moore.Comment

Sometimes some players do better at senior level than others. I'd like to see what some of the others are capable of.
I'm not discounting his 2004 performance. I didn't say he was crap. However, if he is the best we have to bring up then our depth is not great.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Nope, different issues. What you mean is that you disagree with those who think he is the best of our backup options. Not the same thing as actually arguing there's inadequate depth on our list (which would be an exceedingly tough argument to mount).Originally posted by NMWBloods

He nearly did a hammy in the first quarter ... about 5 minutes in, was right in front of me.Originally posted by mpr104
good to see Doyley back and getting amongst the goals.
Don't count your Doyle chickens till they've hatched.
PS: This almost hammy involved limping, then being taken off. He was standing at FF at the time. However he did come back later in the match.Comment

I think it's the same argument. If he is the best of our back-up options, then the rest of of our back-up options aren't particularly outstanding.Originally posted by SimonH

From what I hear that's not the case, but it's hard to tell given our reserves are a useless exercise.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

It is probably fair to say that our back-up options aren't "particularly outstanding". If they were, they wouldn't be playing reserves. I'd be surprised if I watched any future club champions or AA players running around in the reserves yesterday. But then the highest draft pick running around was a no 16 from 3 years ago who is of small stature and doesn't look to have good enough natural football instincts to compensate for this.Originally posted by NMWBloods

That doesn't mean there aren't players there who, given some opportunities, time and patience can't forge themselves 100+ game AFL careers. Bevan fits into this category as much as do Schmidt and Moore. One thing about Bevan, though, is that we know he can make an impact at AFL level, at evidenced by some very good performances in 2004, whereas with Schmidt and Moore we are just guessing and hoping.Comment

Just to clarify on next week's game. The Reserves are playing a SFL Development squad, comprising mainly under 21 players. A SFL side will take on a AFL Canberra side. From what I gather this will be the curtain raiser to the Freo game while the Reserves play before that game.
Maybe Luffy (who's been selected in the SFL side) can shed some light on this.Comment

Given the Swans Reserves are playing the second string U21 side I wouldn't hold out too much on this providing a competitive hitout for the Ressies, although with hopefully a few of the regular ressies playing in the Seniors this week the result might be a bit closer.Comment

Surely some of the reserves players would get picked to play in the AFL Canberra team to play the senior SFL team.
If we believe Roos is going to act on his word and rest some of his more injured senior players, I suspect we'll see Vogels, Bevan and one of Moore or Schmidt (ankle pending) play against Freo.
If we rule these three out then, and also assume Malceski is still injured, on form you would expect at least the following players to get picked for an AFL Canberra representative team:
- Grundy
- Dempster (though he may not have played enough games)
- Spriggs
- Willoughby
- Phillips
- Laidlaw (if fit)
- at least one of Shaw and Rowe
There are another half dozen or so who probably have claims too, but I would think politics would dictate that if any Swans play it will be limited to about this many.Comment
