Not sure where I would have rather been, at Morwell to see the Calder Cannons get pumped by 90 points or at Geelong, at least if I had gone to Geelong, I wouldn't have to have 2 sooks in my car on the way home. ;-))

People, would you frigging stop panicking! We played Geelong at the Cattery & as has been the case over recent years our stoppage-based type of game tends to to hold out before a half a game or so before Geelong's infinitely superior skill takes over and we get a 2nd half towel. Our effort wasn't good. We lacked depth in defence with LRT AND Cbolt out. But we won't be the only team to cop a caning down there. It is best to put the game behind us and look to beating the Doggies in Canberra.
Why were Geelong so dominant? Because when they have the ball they run to open space. The disposals are more often than not straight to the open man, meaning their movements up the field often resemble circle work at training, because their pace and precision with their possessions means they can play on & whisk it upfield without an opponent laying a finger on them.
Us? Well we'll deliberately look for the contested pack so that we could bottle the game up & play it on our terms. Often due to disposing of the ball under pressure we'd be pressured into error, thus resulting in a Cat streaming out of defence sending a pass perfectly onto the chest of a man upfield. Also the Cats are masters of pressuring teams in their own attacking 50. How many goals did Varcoe Johnston et al kick from snaps due to a Swans disposal going astray close to goal? They are the masters of kicking arsey goals such is their level of skill when confident.
Nobody would have beaten the Cats down there today. They play on down the corridor so well on their narrow little ground. And go down at the slightest tough, which in modern day football is looked on favourably by the umpires and rules committee.
The Dogs next week are a different proposition. The big playing surface will suit them. But the sooner we forget today & move on the better. Without Ed "I'm not strong enough to break tackles & not fast enough to get away from tacklers, so I'll get pinged 3-4 times a game" Barlow thank you.

Beating Geelong at Skilled Stadium is the Everest of AFL. We got somewhere past base camp today, but you felt the Cats really had a point to prove after some people had written down their chances.
Anyway (as I posted on the Swans-Cats thread, forgetting there was a GAME thread, so forgive the repeat), no disgrace. If we'd been full-strength and not tired after last week's game we still would have lost. I can't see anyone beating t he Cats at home, unless they rest the entire midfield and not just Gary.
The fact that we held them out for the first half is a big positive - it was raining footy in our back half and they stood up. Our rebound defenders were great, but Geelong's defensive pressure meant we had no space in our forward 50. Players like White, Jack and Mumford were really competitive and young guys like Kennedy, Jetta and Rohan saw how a premiership favourite plays the game.
Amazing how injuries creep up on you. A week ago we were feeling blessed at the low injury toll. Today we were missing six from our 22. McGlynn and LRT will be back next week, Hanna most likely.

Why on earth would you bring in Barlow against the biggest team of hardnuts. We should have played Bevan and replaced Jetta too with a tougher nut. Selection was an issue here and Teddy was hung out to dry in an undermanned defence. We may never have won this in a month of Sundays but we could have chosen a better side. Barlow must be finished now. The wind was a little tricky but delivery into 50 was of the kick and hope variety and Bradshaw fared exactly like BBBH, making Scarlett look like a star, leading up and we kick over his head high and hard. Pykey was serviceable though.Sports do not build character. They reveal it....Heywood Broun

One of the best things to come out of this particular game is that LRT will probably have the knockers back in the bleachers now; yes we missed him like mad and yes he can play. LRT appreciation society should be happy with that at least.
Another good thing is that the MikePyke knockers will also have to take shelter for a while because he has come on in leaps and bounds.
Another point to be made again, is that Mummy is very very early into his career, and he was playing against his old team who dropped him for the last GF; I doubt I would play a good game under those circumstances.
One more "Pollyanna" moment, is that Gary Rohan looks to be someone we can bring into the mix. He worked his way in and around, second and third efforts, against seasoned bodies. He is 18. And he took a great mark and kicked his goal in his first game against the team he followed etc etc. Not as though he was phased by the occasion, and that is a plus. Long long way to go, but the journey has started.
I don't think I want to say anything about Cheese, except that when it goes wrong, it does so in capital letters for that bloke.
Kennedy surprised me, again (I don't know why). How anyone that big can slip in and under is amazing. Probably why he wasn't rated by the P&Ws. They just didn't realise what sort of job he could do.
Kennelly also surprised me. I had thought that perhaps he had made a mistake coming back to AFL, but he stood up today. OK, so not everything was as it should be, but its a whole lot better than round 1.
That'll do me. We can't turn the result around at this stage. I think we were so surprised because we expected greatness and we didn't get it. Still and all, 6 is better than 16, and that's where most of the "experts had us".If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

I'd agree with that - although I am not sure we had another hard nut to come in for Jetta today - different story once McGlynn has recovered though.Comment

well i remain in the lrt is crap but the best we've got camp. and am in no way sure he would have coped any better. i am pretty sure i've seen cam mooney destroy him in the past. and many of the goals came after the ball hit the deck - a situation that he struggles with - witness fev off the groundlast week. in any case the problem was the midfieldComment

I have a question for anyone who went to the game because some things are hard to pick up on TV.
In the first half we made some mistakes, especially giving away some soft goals in defence, but we looked like a structured team out there. And that is reflected in the fact we did move the ball forward with some system.
In the second half, I know we were smashed at effective clearances and hence the defence was under siege, but I thought our defence still did a reasonable job rebounding the ball out of there, up to about a third to a half way up the field. From there, it seemed to be a case of long bombs forward, rather than trying to find a target across half-forward. Was this primarily because our half-backs were tired and/or convinced they were under pressure, or was it that no-one was actually presenting on leads to the half-forward area. In Goodes, White and even Barlow, we had three tall, quick, athletic men all more than capable of leading to that area. White did it quite well in the first half but I don't recall seeing him at all in the second half, ditto Goodesey. It's not even that they seemed to be being beaten in one-on-one contests. I just don't recall the ball going to them there.
So was it poor decision making by the backs or lack of work rate from the forwards?Comment

Can't answer that as I wasn't at the game, but I did notice that at half time geelong had a lot more I50's than we did, and were still only 2 goals up. So our defence was workgin overtime, during the first half to repel attacks. I guess once they cracked our dam wall, it was only a matter of time before the deluge started.
It looked like they'd completely run out of steam by the 4th Q.Comment

Disagree - Jetta will be a gun in the next few years and he will be better for the onslaught he witnessed yesterday.....The Cats pressure is always going to make your fwd line suffer with poor delivery - I thought the back line stood up pretty well in the circumstances. A better reflection of where the Swans are at is this w/e at Manuka.Comment
