Must admit not a fan of Monday night footy

We get a good FTA deal with the Swans in Sydney. All their games are shown live or short delay. We also get a Saturday afternoon game live and a Sunday afternoon game live on Ten and Seven respectively (and sometimes these are the Swans games) . Friday night is a pain because the game is always on several hours delay ie starts around 11.30 pm: I always know the result by this time because you can listen to it on ABC Newsradio 630. I notice that Seven has started to replay the Friday night game on 7TWO (digital) on Saturday morning (6.00 am to 8.30 am). It's handy if you haven't seen the game and you know, for example, that it was a great last quarter......they appear to have longer ad breaks between some goals but they don't seem to break after every goal.
I was in Darwin last week and missed the Port game. FTA was showing Bombers v Cats.....ABC radio was also doing that game but at least was giving updates from Footy Park.
OK, the point of my post. I've just finished watching the Swans v Port game on the AFL site,
AFL Game Analyser Video - AFL.com.au which has a BigPond affiliation. I clicked back a few rounds but I think you can go back to round 1. So, all the season's games are on this site,, and not just the highlights, the whole game and there's no ads. An additional benefit for me is that as a BigPond subscriber this counts as "Unmetered download".....very pleasant! So, I had been wondering how I might get to see the Port game since I didn't record it and now I have.
I just want to raise two other points for those eager to get a bit more AFL in Sydney:
2GB has a AFL programme on Saturday morning from 11.00 am to Midday. They interviewed Mike Pyke last Saturday.....he does a very good Scottish accent (apparently lived there for a while).
2SM has a Saturday afternoon AFL programme from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm.
Oh, one other thing. I went to ABC online (iView) and saw that they are now posting SANFL, WAFL and VFL games under their Sports heading. What interested me was that the VFL game was Coburg v Gold Coast in which Karmichael Hunt made his debut. I don't know that I'm going to make a habit of watching the State leagues but it's good to know that it's there and available at the click of a mouse. Just be aware that iView tends not to archive programmes so you've got to watch them within a week or so of their screening. They keep refreshing the content.Leave a comment:

I seriously couldnt careless about the other teams, i follow sydney not the AFL. As for the over saturation of football in Melbourne...99% of it is just pure rubbish, contrived, clich? and over done.Why do you have to drink beer at the pub? they sell other drinks, and even food too!
I don't drink beer either but watching footy is what you make it - go with a couple of mates to your local, chill out and just enjoy it! Most publicans are used to footy fans screaming abuse at their TVs and won't bat an eyelid. If you find a pro-Swans pub, it's even better cos you won't be the only one!
Everyone has pretty much covered all the bases re coverage, but one thing that I love is just the general footy coverage in Melbourne. Yeah, it's not great to have so little of the Swans on FTA, but compared to every other state, the footy coverage we get on FTA is awesome down here. I can't afford pay TV, but I still get to see Friday night, (mostly) Sat Arvo, Sat night, Sun arvo games, and often highlights late on a Sunday night, plus we also get both Footy Shows (Thurs and Sun), Footy Classified, Before the Game, the post-match wrap ups on Fri and Sat night, VFL on a Sat arvo on ABC as well... and that's not even considering shows on ONE and Fox! I went home to Sydney for a weekend a few weeks ago, and the ONLY positive was the game live on Sat afternoon - the rest was crapola! I'd forgotten how bad it is up there if you don't have pay TV and love your footy. I know what I'd prefer in terms of access to footy!
As long as there are a majority of teams in the competition based in Melbourne, there will always be more Melbourne teams on the TV down here. It's just a simple law of averages and if you decide that you want "your own space" and won't get Pay TV you can't complain that the world isn't adapting to your specific wants and needs.
When i went to Sydney during the football season..it was great getting away from the rubbish and being able to watch the swans live and then being able switch off from football.Leave a comment:

Sorry I wasn't clear, I would take the FTA coverage of the Swans every week over the other footy coverage.Don't get me wrong Vic, I'd love all 8 games live on FTA too, but I'm happy to take what I can get for my footy fixes. We really do get an awful lot down here in Melbourne compared to interstate and to other codes, so if we have to wait an hour for a game, I'm happy to cope! That weekend back in Sydney was pure torture without all the footy!

Living in Victoria, you only have the one perspective. Of course they give a free ride to Victoria teams in their home state, just as they broadcast Brisbane games in Brisbane on FTA.
If you lived in one of these new frontiers you would find FTA coverage tailored to each individual market. Television is not the core of expansion, but rather complements its value.They talk about expansion, they talk about spreading the game to all frontiers and at the end of it it's still a victorian sport and pampered to only victorians..
It's obvious you will not be happy until all 8 games are on FTA each week. No other team sport in this country gets as much free to air coverage as AFL does. Time to get with the times as you are trying to live in a time prior to subscription television.Stupidity at it's finest.Leave a comment:
