When the new Churchill/Brewongle stands are built, I'm hoping the ground stretches by as much again making it longer than the Gabba and but a Pyke less than The G. They'll deepen that Southwest pocket for symmetrys sake if nothing else. Ongoing construction of the stadium, plaza, Southeast Tramway and Tibby Walkway could prove very disruptive over the next few years so with Colless, we at least have a strong voice on the board. Good luck and health to you, Richard. You may very well need it.

I live in the Ryde area and it's only 15 mins for me to get to ANZ Stadium. However, I prefer BY FAR to take the longer and more inconvenient trip to the SCG because:

- it's a more intimate stadium for the crowd, you are much closer to the field regardless of where your seat is. Compare this with ANZ Stadium where I feel a very long way away from the players if I'm seated up in a stand
- it has aesthetic charm, the beautiful old members stands retained. Compare this with ANZ where it's very bland concrete design
- the crowd noise is better retained at SCG, even a half full crowd sounds noisy. Unless you have a near full house at ANZ, I feel somewhat disconnected from crowd noise
- the surrounding suburbs are full of bars, restaurants and other pre & post match options. At the stadium precinct, the options are very limited and completely lacking in ambience. By the time I make my way out of the stadium it feels to hard to force my way into the main pub there (the one under the hotel), so my enjoyment of a Swans win is cut shorter
- the condition of the ground is much better, resulting in better footy to watch. ANZ is used more for rugby (league + union) each winter, so the grass is left longer for their benefit. Also at ANZ, the requirement to move the stands closer for rugby means that these parts of the ground are not in good condition when moved back for AFL

I can rationalise it all as per above, but it all comes down to this ... I have a very strong emotional bond with the SCG having gone their since I was a kid. For me, ANZ will always be a less preferable alternative. Many Melbournites have the same feelings about the MCG vs. Docklands.

Of course the swans want play out there. They do not want to be pigeon holed as the latte sipping nambies feom the eastern suburbs. They desire to be the team for all of sydney.

They do that by playing games where the fans are. Plenty of swans fans ONLY go to ANZ games. I am one of them.

So you've never seen a live game of AFL where players don't slip & slide. I feel sorry for you.

It's great that it's in your area & many supporters living there like the easy access to it but it doesn't excuse the fact that the playing surface is the worst one in the competition.
It is a disgraceful surface.

Absolutely!!

The SCG is our home, it's where the players are comfortable, it's where they train (during the season anyway), a beautiful new stand, nearly 50,000 capacity, did I mention it's our @@@@ing home ground so forgive me if I think we should expect all our home games to be played there.

This is an opinion of another westie who's never had a latte in his life but loves the SCG. Sort of screws up the Stereotype doesn't it.

The fact is:

The Swans since moving to Sydney, particularly over the last 10 odd years, have moulded an image/ culture/ brand which is tied irrevocably to the SCG...It's our home.
