Well done to us all , as we predicted immediately that Hanners would be fine.

I was concerned about Eski , but the MRP has acted sensibly.
Still , I look forward to the day when an umpire is charged with negligent contact. Not every collision is the player's fault.

    Yes.
"Contact between the Sydney Swans' Nick Malceski and umpire Troy Pannell from the third quarter of Friday's match was assessed.

Umpire Pannell was backing away from play while Malceski was not looking at the umpire, with his focus elsewhere, and a collision occurred.

It was the view of the panel the collision was accidental and no further action was taken."

My faith in the MRP has been restored on both the Hanners and NicMal bumps! Well done to the MRP in the face of a lot of one-eyed condemnation from other clubs.

Was it declared not to be a free kick, or was it just not mentioned?

    Words from MRP statement:

"Contact between the Sydney Swans' Dan Hannebery and Essendon's Michael Hurley from the third quarter of Friday's match was assessed. The ball was loose with Hurley and Hannebery coming to the contest from opposite directions. Hurley is reaching forward to pick up the ball while Hannebery also has his arms out to collect the ball, while turning to the side at the last moment. The pair reach the loose ball at the same time with both players attempting to take possession and a collision occurs. It was the view of the panel that Hannebery was contesting the ball and the Sydney player did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken."

What is in the rules and what the viewing audience thinks is fair sometimes differs. Being brought up on league it is more play the ball all the time and not the man where in AFL it includes for the bump. I personally think that extra leeway should be given to situations where the player going for the ball makes an "illegal" hit, eg as in the Viney case. It seems like commonsense has returned.
