Richards as captain is an interesting suggestion. He could be a bit of a stop-gap while Parker is groomed a bit more - a la Bob Murphy for the Dogs.

I think Murphy more got the captaincy because he was the best man for the job. He should have been made captain ahead of Griffin - Griffin would probably still have been a Dog had that been the case.

I many respects I see Hanners as a captain that shows on field leadership by his actions. His courage and commitment are important qualities. But I do have some reservations about his ability for DRIVING the team forward.

Off field he hasn't covered himself in glory at such a young age. I'd vote for him when he ceases to slaughter the footy by foot.

Parker has played 100 games I think ... we must stop thinking of him as a new talent ... we need that sort of young bloke to lead the next generation with more energy than we are currently getting from our captains who still have a bit to contribute but are not inspirational (at least any more).

The next two captains should be Parker and Hanebery. Both tough as nails. They will be followed by Heeney and Mills followed by Emilio Kennedy!

I expect Shaw and Goodes to retire at the end of this season. Richards as captain is an interesting suggestion. I am of the view that it is not ideal to burden Parker with the captaincy just yet even if he might do a good job. Is Richards part of the leadership group? I have no idea who they are. Smooch could be a wildcard option except maybe he's too low profile? Reminds one a bit of Maxwell for the Pies - except that Smith doesn't attract the hate that Maxwell did. Yet another possibility that I wouldn't entirely dismiss is Buddy! Despite his glamour he is very earnest about his footy. That said maybe the status quo is the best option for a bit longer? It is hard to see them ditching Kizza given the current alternatives - but I can see them speeding up the transition process. Macca's tenure must be a bit linked to his form. If he's not performing consistently it's hard for him to lead.

Do we know if he has the leadership skills? Just because he finds the footy on the field doesn't automatically mean he is a good leader.

The players voted him into the leadership group this year, so they must think his "leadership skills" are OK. I doubt he'd think he's ready to be captain yet, however, based on his own comments when asked about his leadership potential.

We have no idea who the club really rates as the best candidate for the next captain (s)

I do think that a captain should generally be a player who consistently 'stars', thereby setting an example.

Agree ... sick of this co captain foolishness ... trouble is neither of the existing captains are what we need ... Parker would be fine by me ... we need someone without fear who can set an example in tough situations and then also produce brilliance. He is not too young for the job. I love what Kieran has done as a player ... but his contributions have become occasional rather than constant / electric ... Kennedy is an example in terms of commitment but opposition tactics and poor disposal are blunting his effectiveness ... not a captain IMO.
On another subject, more people seem to be picking up on the Lloyd "slide" ... I wonder if the coach has even noticed what is apparent week after week.

Why don't we make Michael Clarke our honorary captain. Then you will see some serious dribble spoken. Nothing wrong with our captains on my book.

I'd be wary making Parker captain so young. He's a future captain, for sure, but I wonder if we should let him ply his trade for a couple more years and keep learning from the other leaders before he takes on that extra burden.

The problem could be that the club doesn't think we have ready made players to cover the likes of Shaw, Goodes and a couple of other older players so they get rid of some untried players till we can trade in some better players the following year.
I think we need to bite the bullet and say sorry your time is up to a few of the older players and bring in a couple of young players and play them and see what happens.
On our current form we will be lucky to win another game this year.

Until we try, we won't know, exactly.

And do you think these young players get any confidence with such a attitude from the coaching staff?

And we already have lost a lot of good young players, with two or more years in the system to other club.

No courage means we will slide down the ladder.

Oh and on mcveigh, when you start having bad form fluctuations, it really is the start of the end.
