When does the time come for some player management. Papley and Mills are first year players and have played five straight games. They have played at the large Adelaide Oval and now on the wet and heavy SCG. Their young bodies must be starting to feel the pinch.

When do they get their "general soreness break"? They won't be able to sustain this level for the whole season.

Every player is different.
We tend to have players who play for a LONG time without a break - some since debut.
I would exoect each player to be looked at and talked to constanly to gauge whether they need a rest.

Of course most won't ever say "I need a week off" so it's up to the staff to tell when they do.
I would expect them to have some tools on hand to help them define this.

If Papley is feeling top notch, then let him play on...

I heard the SEN interview and it was Francis Leach interviewing him who suggested Hiscox was debuting because he was named on the extended bench. By the sounds of it it was just a mistake by Leach and Harley never made it sound like it was happening, he just sort of went along with it.

Well Laidler is in doubt from his concussion but you'd think his logical replacement would be Jones. To be honest I don't think Hiscox is close to playing senior football, surely it would be more sensible to pick someone like Towers or Rose as a replacement for a mid/forward.

His worst errors in the past have looked like he just turned his brain off and was sloppy with execution of a skill, so bad were they.

Generally, speaking he made good decisions but unfortunately "in the past" (!!!) he was unable to execute sufficiently well or too slowly. One of the reasons I believe was that after getting into position to take a possession (a skill he executes beautifully), he then had few options immediately available and he had to slow down to allow those further down field to reposition themselves. This meant he often hurried his kicks or had to kick to space.

In more recent times, the likes of Lloyd, Hanaberry, Towers and Cunningham, have read him better on the switch, allowing him to dish off quickly and more effectively. The addition of Papley, Hewitt and Robinson have given him further targets.

I've often been critical of Reg in the past for his occasional clangers but he is a great defender and has started the year in great form.

If you go back and watch some 2015 games you will see that it was last year that his kicking improved significantly. In 2016 he has continued his superb form. I believe he has been our premier defender over the last 13 months.

Yes he does - and Reg often gets wrapped up with Ted and retired as well - despite the fact that Reg is in fantastic form, only turns 30 in June and hopefully should have quite a few years left!

Meg, Reg was passed up in the draft and we picked him up as a rookie. From his first NAB Cup game as a forward he showed something. He was touted as a top 10 pick. Almost every week he gives away his mandatory holding free 20 metres out, but his backing up and mopping up behind the play is superb. Watch how many times he works to the fat side to open up the run off half back. Like many, I used to cringe when he got yhe footy. No longer; it is in safe hands. And opposition supports rate him as one of the best defenders in the comp, even if the the All Australian panel don't.

If you think back a bit to the early days of LRT's career, there weren't many highlights until the 2005 GF, after which we started to view him differently. Eventually he became a legend loved by all Swans' supporters. Reg also went though quite a long and much maligned apprenticeship. Even the most sought out defenders like Cale Hooker go through much criticism during early years. It just takes time to learn the craft.

It's hard to know how Aliir will go this week or what path his career will take, only that it's not often that key defenders come out and play great from the start. I'm sure there will be mistakes, but hopefully he shows he has a big future in the AFL. As it stands now, a Talia-Aliir KPD combo looks the most likely replacement for Ted and Reg although that's just based on who we have on our list rather than on a body of good performances.

The lad is only 21, so this is perfect timing. Horse seems quite energised by the progress of our debutants this year and long may that continue.

The best case scenario I can see is AA giving a decent account of himself the next two weeks and that he goes back and to the twos, perhaps with another match or two later in the year, but comes back in the pre-season 2017 ready to stake a claim for a starting spot.

At the start of this thread I was proposing that Mills has a "general soreness" break. I now understand that this is a dangerous approach. Melbourne rested 1st year player Oliver, who was doing well. He was due to be available for the upcoming round, but Melbourne have brought in
Petracca, whose VFL form has been good. Now Oliver is further back in the pecking order.

This would be a downer of Oliver's confidence and we don't want to put Mills or Papley through this.

He may well still have one but not after 5 games

Reg ought to be in AA contention at this stage of the year. Rarely gets outbodied, and his ball use has improved majorly this year. Is having a cracking start to the year , and he was pretty darn good last year to.

Absolutely, he is one of the most under-rated KPDs in the comp.

And Ted has started well too but I reckon a long season will tales its toll on his body and he'll decide he won't go around in 2017. Having said that I trust the coaching staff to make the right call there
