Marsh Series v GWS game 1 reflections

Correct - One game! A game in which the whole swans team stunk it up ! If you’re judging people on what they produced in that game then just about everyone on of that 22 would be on the scrap heap ! Nankervis may not be a ‘star’ but he’s a premiership ruckman ( not to be sniffed at) and you’d have to take his resume over Naismith’s any day.

Also pretty sure that Cameron was injured for a lot of the period that we were sans ruckmen. He’s still relatively young, I’d be hesitant to write him off just yet. Let’s see how he goes at the the Pies. (He looks likes he’s a very fair chance to double his games tally in round 1 according to their coach! )

Paul Bevan is a Premiership player too. Good on him but hardly a game changer. Right place at the right time just like Narkervis.

If you want to turn back the clock and keep Mitchell, then you'll have to put up with Heeney running around in blue vertical stripes and possibly Mills playing somewhere else.

And if I hear any more about Nankervis and Newman et al, in the words of Terry Wallace, I'll spew up! Nankervis is a very average ruck man who suits the way Richmond play (ie. no need for a ruck man really as they played without one pre Nanka) If I hear the same about Darcy Cameron I'll scream as well. The one game he got to show his wares was against Gold Coast and he got one possession! The fact that he didn't play when we had no ruckmen says it all.

I did say my thoughts were with the benefit of hindsight. I can accept what's done is done and we will never really know what would've panned out if different decisions had been made. Onwards and (I hope) upwards!

I think after our 2016 GF loss, there has been this obsession with speed and two way running. Only have to see who we have drafted since and comments from KB and the coaches. Perhaps this was as a result of JJ's cracker of a game against us (mind you, he hasn't played a game that good since). I feel Mitchell was a victim of this thought process and his perceived lack of pace and penetration over rode the fact that he just gets first hands to the ball more often than not. As a result, we kept Kizza and Hanners on when we should've let them go and put the cash into Mitchell. At the time, not an unreasonable decision but one that has now been shown to be wrong.

Good points but also keep in mind Hanners wasn't the same after copping that sliding knee tackle in the 2016 GF. It started his wretched run of injuries. Had his body & form stayed good the loss of Mitchell wouldn't have been as severely felt as it is still today. This is again all with the benefit of hindsight. The club clearly wanted to retain Mitchell but couldn't do so cause of the cap squeeze they found themselves in. Hope they've learnt from this in light of the Daniher FA prospect. As I've posted in another thread any significant cap space we may have at season's end should be utilised to recruit a quality midfielder over trying to secure Daniher.

I think we are lacking midfield depth. The fact that we will need JPK to turn back the clock to circa 2016 indicates where we are at. Hately, Caldwell, Green, Cummings and O'Halloran in all likelihood would be walk up starters to our midfield rotation.

To be honest, I was disappointed. Without at least 8 of their best 22, Giants still showed much more confidence, determination and skills than us. I know it was just a pre-season game but I was expecting much more from our players. There were simply no "generals" to perform some heroics to will the team to play truly for the Bloods. Although Rampe was marshalling and organising the defence loudly and enthusiastically, he could only play limited minutes and without Mills and Lloyd as his trusted lieutenants, there were too many turn overs at the back. Without too much good supplies, our forwards were sometimes just "pedestrians" and not mobile enough. Hewett was below his standard. he did play some minutes as a forward but still not involved much. According to Kirk, Heeney, Papley, Mills and Lloyd should play in the second Marsh Game, they would probably replace Wicks, Warner, Ronke, Knoll or Fox(Ankle injury?) With Mills and Lloyd back and Rampe can play more minutes, I think we should let Dawson play more minutes in the mid, he did that in NEAFL with very good performance. Hopefully our team can re bounce quickly and show our true colours.

very poor effort. not a lot to like. Not sure if I would say Gray was good, Naismith was just (perhaps we should have recruited Jacobs )he killed us in the ruck Rowbottom, McInernmey and O'Riordan were just NEAFL standard

Funnily I thought McInerney was one of our best. Unlike others he was very clean. People are hard on Naismith. I thought he was good and had the better of Sauce.

It could be as simple as these newer faces adapting to playing with each other, or maybe they were playing selfishly, focusing on their individual performances and pressing claims for round one rather than adhering to the team discipline and structures. At least that is how it felt to me from the bleachers. Perhaps it was also obvious in the coaches box, which might explain Kirk's relatively scathing comments after the match.

On the positive it was a beautiful afternoon weather wise, and I got two beers and a pie for only twenty bucks. Can't say that
at the SCG.
