I have to admit to being a Johnny come lately with the Swans.

Born in Fitzroy and followed them all their life after.

I move up to Sydney in 66 and when the Swans arrived in the 80s , I went to all their games. A footy starved Vic expatriate.

But when the Roys came to town , my maroon and blue heart came straight to the fore.

!996 came, and the Roys went.

I became a Swans member, res seat in the Brewongle for 25 years..2 flags...plenty finals...much joy.

No regrets , but still harbor hatred for the VFL sacking the Royboys.

Go Swans.

What happened to Fitzroy would have been devastating for you, royboy, exacerbated by the fact that the club had to play its very last game ever in Western Australia!

Great to hear about your transition to the Swans. I have in the past wondered about your RWO posting name.

I recently rewatched all the ‘Jack Irish’ TV episodes (lockdown activity). I really enjoyed the depiction of the ongoing pain of the old Roy supporters.

One of my best friends, also a Fitzroy diehard, like you has never forgotten or forgiven. She became a Dees supporter after partnering with a Melbourne fanatic + Paul Roos time as Melbourne coach.

You've got a few years on me Basher.

First grandy was the replay in 48, when Melb smashed the Bombers after a draw the week before.

Coleman toying with the Roys in '50 and '51. The week before his career ending cartilage injury in '54, Coleman kicked 14!! God knows what he still could have been.

Barassi in the mid/late 50s. One of a kind. Never played 100 minutes in his career. Bits of pieces of ruckwork., hung around the pockets until Melbourne needed him. Then...BANG! Total domination of the whole field for 25 minutes or so. Amazing footballer. Koutafides in that couple of years was the only similar type I've seen.

Peter Box for the Dogs around '54.

Darrel Baldock in the 60s at St Kilda. Awesome ball control...on a string, and the muddier and rainier the day, the better he got. I still have him in my best three I saw.

Hawthorn's Hudson. Stats tell the story. What a forward.

Ian Stewart, Polly Farmer...We're moving closer to the periods plenty on here remember, so I'll step back.

Best 3?? Really difficult.

Apart from the great Laurie Nash, would love to know who your favourite players were during the years you were at the Lake Oval. Nothing better than a bit of nostalgia now our season is over! I was 12 yo at the time Roadrunner. That was 76 year ago . Hard to beleive how time sneaks along.

I had a good position at Carlton during the 45 bloodbath grand final and had a clear view of an altercation when Nash temporarily put Carlton captain Bob Chitty out of procedings. Chitty recovered and went to the forward line, kicked a couple of goals and started the Carlton dominance.

However the most feared man in the game then was Jack "Basher" Williams. He didnt draw the line at anybody. Not many of the "hard men " of the game had an inclination to take him on. Unfortunately his "Barry Hall" hit on a young Ken Hands was not a good sight. Hands recovered and after half time played a big part in the Carlton win.

You must have been just a kid at the time Basher! Some game that- unfortunately we lost both the game and the fight.
Small wonder our intense dislike of Carlton!
