NEAFL 2016 Round 15

Canberra Demons v Sydney Swans Reserves

Saturday 9th July 2016
12.00pm
Manuka Oval

Just under 2 months ago the Reserves traveled to Canberra and defeated the Demons by 132 points, their greatest margin of victory in 2016. The Demons were without a win at that stage of that season but have improved with 2 wins on the board including an impressive away victory over Redland last week as well as creditable performances against the Giants and the Suns reserves teams.

The Swans meanwhile had a tough first half against defending premiers the NT Thunder, going into the main break in arrears, but sparked by an impressive third quarter showing by Tom Papley and Aliir Aliir, ran over the top of the Thunder to cruise to a big 11 goal victory.

With a strong contingent of 16 listed AFL players named for this game, the Swans will be favourite to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Changes
In: Davis, Laidler, Nankervis, McGlynn, Melican
Out: Aliir ALIIR (seniors), Tom DERICKX (injury), Sam NAISMITH (seniors), Tom PAPLEY (seniors), Ted RICHARDS (seniors)

Nankervis will take Naismith's spot as the number 1 ruckman, and Galloway will get valuable minutes as his backup. Davis and Laidler will replace Ted and Aliir in the back line. McGlynn replaces Papley but will spend time in the midfield as well as up forward. Melican's return from injury will necessitate a move for one of the defenders further up the ground, probably Murray or Leonardis

Young Jordan Harper is the standout player in this team, currently joint leader with Southport's ex-Suns midfielder Andrew Boston in the NEAFL MVP vote count. Despite the Demons being his 3rd team in 3 years (with Belconnen and Ainslie both bowing out of the NEAFL in consecutive years), and playing in a losing team week after week, Harper has put together an impressive season thus far. Playing more as a wingman with Ainslie, his move into an inside role has worked wonders for him averaging 31.8 disposals, 7.1 tackles, 4.9 marks, 4.2 clearances and just under a goal a game. He will surely come under the watchful eye of our tagger Jordan Foote.

Isaac Taylor is the Demons' other prolific ball winner. Taylor played for Belconnen in the local Canberra comp last year and won the B&F in that competition. However they will be missing the services of former Adelaide Crow midfielder Sam Martyn and boom youngster Tom Faul who is a Giants Academy member.

Former Crow Ben Dowdell is one of the better rucks in the NEAFL and will provide good opposition for Nankervis.
