NEAFL Round 16

Eastlake Demons v Sydney Swans Reserves
Saturday 6th July 2013
Newcastle

Things are starting to get desperate for the Sydney Swans Reserves. Although they still sit atop the the Eastern Conference Ladder, a run of 3 straight losses has seen them fall back to the pack and are lying in a precarious state, being 2 games and percentage away from falling out of finals running. With 4 of the remaining 6 games against the stronger AFL reserves sides, this match looms as an important must-win game for Jared Crouch's team.

Eastlake have bounced back after a poor start to their season, losing 4 of their first 6 matches. They are in good, competitive form having triumphed in 5 of the past 6 games, all of close results with the greatest margin being 28 points against Sydney Uni.

R9 Reserves 22.12 (144) defeated Eastlake 5.13 (43)
The Reserves were too good for a disappointing Eastlake side who never recovered from a poor start. Down by 6 goals at quarter time, poor goalkicking snuffed out any chance of a fightback by the Demons. Mitch Morton continued his solid form with a team leading 6 goals whilst tall forwards Mark Seaby, Jesse White and Matthew Spangher all ended with 4 goals each.

Goals: Morton 6, Seaby 4, White 4, Spangher 4, Mitchell, Lockyer, Moore, Kilpatrick
Best: Seaby, Spangher, Biggs, Lewington, Meredith, Cunningham

7Harry CUNNINGHAM7514Hardworking performance, racking up a game-high 14 tackles against the Lions midfield. Fitness building.
18Jesse WHITE82219(seniors emergency) Returns to give the Reserves a much-needed ruck option.
19Tony ARMSTRONG606(seniors emergency) Tough gig but acquited himself well in a defensive six under siege last week.
22Dean TOWERS11120Quiet and isolated at full forward for most of the game last week, salvaged by a strong last quarter performance with 2 goals.
23Jordan LOCKYER1213Battledaway against the imposing Lions tall forwards, did well in spurts but has to keep his concentration up.
27Daniel ROBINSON1193Team high 7 clearances last week, but has lost his goalscoring touch being held goalless in the last 3.
28Matthew DICK820Played on key forwards in Richards' absence and will do so again.
31Harrison MARSH1160Could end up tagging O'Dwyer or Brabazon.
36Alex BROWN12312Played exclusively as a backman last week, mostly on the resting ruckman and while beaten in some physical contests by the taller Lions, was crucial in clearing the ball from the Swans defensive area.
44Jake LLOYD12829Suffocated by a tight tag last week but still managed to contribute to the Swans' onball division

Changes
In: White (seniors)
Out:

The inclusion of White is especially important as the Swans have been running around without a recognised ruckman in their last 3 games, all of which have been losses. Xavier Richards was expected to be an in but injured a quad in training.

The names O'Dwyer, Brabazon and Bruce should be familiar to regular watchers of the Reserves. Braba missed 2 months of football after suffering a serious injury against Queanbeyan and this will be his 4th game back. O'Dwyer has been collecting plenty of possessions in the midfield, while Bruce has been playing in his usual forward spot but has not hit the same form as in the past 2 years. All 3 will require cloes attention from the Swans.

Dean Roulstone leads the Demons goalkicking this year, including a matchwinning haul of 9 against Redland 3 weeks ago. He has been well complemented by youngster Sam Mardling who has kicked 21 goals in his 12 games. Other players in good form include utility John Van Meurs, ruckman Chad Gibson and defender Xavier McMahon.
