BTW, the rules around matching bids as they currently stand (ie before the AFL changes the rules) is that if you finish in the top four you can only match one first round bid for an academy player. If you finish fifth to eighth you can match two. If you finish out of the top eight there is no restriction.

And of course these limits don't apply to father-son candidates. So Carlton could finish top four this year (yeah, emphasis on 'could') and still be allowed to match first round picks on both Camporeale twins (if they go that high).

Edit: The restrictions may actually apply to top 20 bids, rather than the more elastic "first round". I can't remember precisely and I can't be bothered to go and look it up right now.
Ta. Looks like we might be restricted to one first rounder for the next couple of seasons. I doubt if it will be a problem this season, but it could be a problem next year.

And I wouldn't really include Tippett as a go home. While he was born in Sydney, he spent pretty well all his childhood and played all his junior footy in Queensland. (When typing that, I was very tempted to find and reopen the legendary Tippett thread).

Top 20, or as you say Liz, 'the elastic first round' which last year got out to 27? if I recall. Let's see where it settles for the future.

Watching the AFL closely to see what modifications they make to the draft.

And how's the Vic clubs whinging about WA clubs getting extra Business Class seats! I see Hardwick, that would be the bloke who sooked it up about having to play at Marvel, has fired a broadside at those clubs given how little they travel. Also seems to have come around to supporting Northern Academies

People have short (and self-serving) memories.

When Eddie Maguire landed in Sydney to take up his short-lived role as CEO of Nine, he was vocal about
    a) how expensive Sydney was compared to Melbourne and hence that a cost of living allowance was most definitely needed for the Swans; and
    b) how hard it was to find opportunities for his sons to play junior football in Sydney. This was pre-academy, but sounded like an argument for why academies might be a good thing.

    And now...

I won’t get this site closed down by defaming anyone with details but let me tell ya as someone who’s worked in media and communication circles, Eddie’s bad behaviour extends well beyond his evil manipulation of all things footy and what he’s done to the Swans and Goodes. A truly awful person.

That's not surprising about Eddie. I hate how his behaviour is excused because of his "philanthropy".

I've had to endure watching him the last couple of weeks on Footy Classified. One of the episodes there was discussion on COLA and again he brought up that it shouldn't be used to pay for a maid 😏. This guy is just delusional.

Chad has put contract talks on hold.

Sorry I posted a link to the Age and stuffed the thread so I've now deleted it.

that is not generally a good sign in AFL...........when a key player puts talks on hold

That generally means there is a big gap between what we can afford to pay and what he is probably being offered elsewhere.

Chad is playing like a mid 20yr old Dustin Martin right now .................there must be a fair few clubs super keen on him !

This is not good for us. We only just unloaded then used up Franklin’s salary.

If we offer too much to keep Warner, we will be in the same boat again of not being able to afford a decent key back when Rampe retires or to pick up a developed key forward.

Can’t blame him wanting to take advantage of a huge deal and be set up for life. Maybe the best we can hope for is a short deal so he can then take in big dollars then.

Snell and Edwards get contract extensions. Good on them - both have had good years and look very promising.

    Snell and Edwards extend
'Delicious' is a fun word to say

U could almost 😅 machine Hardwick going $1m plus pa for him at the Suns.

Hardwick loves his turnover counter attack footy which really allows creative explosive guys like Warner to flourish.

Warner is contracted til the end of 2025, why would he want to extend now when none of the others have.

He would have every option available to him now, 2yrs, 5yrs 8yrs.

Money will vary but only the bottom 4 teams have big money to spend.

If you looked closely at Freo you will see they would not have a lot of spare cash, which is why players have been leaving.

Their only chance to free up some cash is to offload Darcy and i doubt any decent team is taking all that on for free.

By end of 2025 they have to re-sign, Pearce, Brayshaw, Aish, Sharp and Erasmus as well as a few players coming into big money parts of their Long Term Contracts.

We arent the only team delicately balancing the books

Correct waswan. Every contending team is likely running close to the cap, it's only the crap teams that have spare cash and remember they still have to pay 95% (with minor variations) to a crap list so actual spare $ aren't as big as the media likes to waffle on about.

Seems to be great comaraderie among our younger core players, that is highly valuable. Clubs find extra $ by letting go fringe players, running minimum number on the main list, maximum Rookie Lists, front ending contracts when you do have spare $, longer deals at lesser p.a. (we have a number of those) and an ever rising salary cap.

Media love this contract on hold/salary cap squeeze/war chest stuff, gives them something to talk about, but I'd be most surprised if we can't keep the critical players. Let's be honest, us Joe Public know next to nothing about the real detail of salary caps or contracts, and I suspect the media is full of bs about this as well as they get fed snippets by player managers (remember Ned Guy player manager turned Pies disastrous list manager LOL) snippets fed to the media to suit those managers shenanigans.

That Fox show Midweek Tackle where three of the media sit around wanking on feeding each other is one of the worse for sensationalism. I can hear tonight's episode before it starts 'now Ralph, you've got the big scoop on Chad Warner putting off contract talks' and then Ralph will go on to talk about his mail telling him about the Swans cap squeeze, lurking clubs with warchests, desire of Chad to return home wank wank wank

Full confidence in the club, it's one of the absolute best.
