    Barry Mitchell's son a gun?

Young gun with Swans connection - Official AFL Website of the Sydney Swans

"ONE YOUNG player who shone at the recent NAB AFL U16 tournament in west Sydney was a young West Australian midfielder with a Sydney Swans link.

Tom Mitchell just happens to be the son of 170-game former Swan Barry Mitchell.

The 16-year-old was a standout for WA and was awarded his state's MVP for the tournament."

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere on here, so thought I'd chuck it in.

As MVP for the WA side, he sounds pretty promising. Have to admit he well and truly passed under the radar, I guess being based over there has something to do with it.

I wonder whether he would take up the father/son option...?

    Anyone know anything more?

sounds interesting, wouldn'y mind a gun midfielder in the side. A question, have we ever got a decent player under the father/son rule? And also, how did we miss out on Anthony Daniher's son exactley? Not that I think he is a gun, just curious as to how Essendon got him and we didn't?

Daniher qualified for both us and the Bombers under the FS rule and therefore got to choose which he wanted to go to.

In terms of other quality FS picks, both James and Doyle were pretty well regarded as junior and both showed flashes of their promise while on our list. Sadly both had careers decimated by injuries.

Dempster is the only other FS pick in recent years.

Wow that would be a great get if he follows on with this potential, particularly during the compromised drafts

The FS rules aren't as good these days. Unlike Geelong who claimed Ablett, Hawkins and Scarlett with 3rd round picks.

If Son of Barry (SOB) is any good he will no doubt attract interest from other clubs, and particularly in a compromised draft where GC17 or West Sydney have so many picks in the first round. Any player with just a little bit of talent will attract interest from other clubs. Under FS draft rules Sydney will nominate that it intends to take Mitchell in the draft. If any other club reckons he is worthy of a 1st or 2nd round pick, we would have to use our matching 1st or 2nd round pick to get him to our list. The only benefit having a FS pick these days is it gives you the right of last refusal on the player. Of course if Sydney nominates that it will pick Mitchell in the draft, and no other club wants him, we can use our last pick in the draft to pick him up instead of our 3rd round pick. Which is exactly how Jaxon Barham got to Collingwood this year.

    Confused ??

The only other FS I can remember was Gareth John, who of course was also showing flashes of brilliance until he had his throat and voice box smashed in by Simon Madden in a ruck contest. Ended his footy career completely.

We haven't really had a lot of luck with FS pick ups.

Geez I'm still pissed off that Dempster is now playing for the filth.

That is something that can change....and only time, luck and genetics will tell.
Fast forward to draft years of 2025 on and we could be spoiled with a plethora of FS choices:
    SOM (Son of Magic)
SOG (Sons of Goodes - just twinkles at the moment)
    SOJ (Son of Jude)
    SOCK (Son of Kirky)
    SOROK (Son of Ryano)
SOH and SOH (Twin Sons of Hall)

Then we might also have Tom Harley's future children already signed on as Scholarship holders....they don't really want to move to Victoria

    We can all dream!

James, Doyle. You're right. Not much luck.

Mitchell is very exciting news though.

Gosh he looks like his father! Not the same coloured hair but the face! He must be a bit of a gun because Barry is playing it down. Not like him. Must be busting with pride and worried he is going to overdo it.

The compromised draft is the very reason why it's good timing to have a F/S pick.

If he did happen to be a genuine top 10 talent then under the bidding system we may have to use our 1st round pick. Given that Gold Coast and and/or Sydney will be hogging first round picks, our first round pick may not come along until the mid teens/early twenties. If the 1st rounder bid is not until after our pick then we would only need to use our 2nd round pick.

Obviously this is all hypothetical, but the point I'm making is that it is a huge advantage if we can snare a talented player under the odds during the compromised drafts and the F/S rule is one of the few ways to achieve this
