Thread: Swans Game Plan

    Swans Game Plan

Commentators were saying during Hawks Pies game that most teams that have been planning to make the ground small with defense over the summer have been wasting their time. The game has moved on so that sides need run from defense, pin point kicks that might be risky then from time to time long kicks over the top of the zone. Do we have an attacking enough game style that can break over the top of the zone defense?

    Yes
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

With the Jetta and Hanna wing duo up and going and Parker and Harry I believe we not only have the players but can develop a game plan around the sort of players playing on the day. I don't believe in one or two set game plans, footy is a simple game and if players have footy smarts they can change any basic game plan on the spot to help the side. For instance Parker changed the tempo and then instead of kicking the expected lone kick he laid it off to Macca. We now have plenty of lads with footy smarts and so our game plan can be the bones of the whale and the players flesh it out depending on the situation.

Just because one team is having success with a particular game plan doesn't mean everyone has to play that way in order to be successful.

Yes it does if you listen to the experts in Melbourne.

You play to the strengths of your personnel and not to a game plan that suits another side that is an easy way to get beaten every time by that side. There are several ways of beating the press. Do what the Hawks do with precision kicking, kick long to tall targets, slow it down, run it fast (Kennedy's Commando style). We will play it our way and have several ways of doing it.

I guess our style, judging from last year, is trying to be hitting contested situations and coming away with the ball from them.

Personally i think we do what we do well. Main concern using round 1 as an example we had 71-29 inside 50's and both teams had 9 marks. Thats a shocking return. Deplorable. Granted we kicked many goals as the ball was still down that end but if we can somehow manage to fix that up im confident in the rest of our game.

Hard to take any marks when the opposition is employing an ?ber flood.

You'll see a different intensity from the Swans this week. In the preseason there was definitely an increased emphasis on moving the ball quicker so I expect to see that against the Dockers.
