NEAFL Round 21
Brisbane Lions Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves
Saturday 18th August 2012 1.30pm
Yeronga
An exciting end to the NEAFL regular season with both clubs in contention for a minor premiership in their respective conferences. Brisbane need a win to hold off the Thunder and claim the Northern conference title while the Swans will require a win and hope that Tuggeranong cause a major boilover in beating current leaders Queanbeyan at Greenway Oval on Sunday.
However the Swans won't be too perturbed if they fail to capture their second consecutive minor premiership, for with the introduction of the Top 5 finals series in 2012, the minor premiers earn the first week of the finals off. This would be an unwelcome break for the team as it impacts on the form and fitness of the fringe players hoping to push their names for senior selection as the AFL finals approach.
Regardless of the result, the listed players in this game have plenty to play for as during the NEAFL finals series as the number of listed players allowed in the Swans squad is trimmed to just 12, down from a total of 18 in the regular season (with a max of 14 on the field at any one time). From the size of the squads in the past month or so, there will be around 2-4 players who will have to be cut. It will be a tough break on the unlucky players to miss out, particularly those who have played the majority of NEAFL games but find themselves squeezed out next week.

Past Meetings
2012
R8 Brisbane Reserves 11.20 (86) defeated by Reserves 18.12 (120) @Yeronga
The Reserves travelled to Brisbane to upset the Lions who aided the Swans by being incredibly wasteful in front of goal. The Swans stormed to a 6 goal lead at quarter time and maintained a 4 goal lead at the main break and despite a couple of Lions surges in the 2nd half, confidently withstood the fusillade of shots from Brisbane to win quite comfortably. Mitch Morton continued his goal glut by bagging 8 to complement his 10 the previous week. Captain Jarred Moore dominated the stoppages yet again aided by the taps of big Canuck Mike Pyke
Goals: Morton 8 Walsh 2, Davis, Thurgarland, Spangher, Cunningham, Moody, Bosschieter, Moore, Meredith
Best: Moore, Pyke, Walsh, Cunningham, Biggs, Heath
R16 Reserves 16.7 (103) defeated by Brisbane Reserves 17.20 (122) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
The Swans for a variety of reasons had plenty of regulars missing and a very strong Lions outfit took advantage of their absence to record a strong away win. Truth be told, if they had converted a higher number of their set shots, the game would have been over early in the 2nd half. Tommy Walsh stood up in the absence of his forward line teammates to take strong grabs, and finished with a deserved 3 goals. Brett Meredith provided plenty of run and dash from the half back line while Trent Dennis-Lane continued to impress onlookers in his new hybrid midfield-forward role.
Goals: Broome 3, Parker 3, Dennis-Lane 3, Walsh 3, Moore, Krochmal, Mitchell, Lamb
Best: Walsh, Meredith, Dennis-Lane, Heath, Plug, Parker
2011
R10 Brisbane Reserves 14.13 (97) defeated by Reserves 16.8 (104) @ Yeronga
The Reserves were equally impressive and disappointing in this game. They shot to big leads in the 1st and the 3rd quarters, only to be reeled in by the Lions in the 2nd and 4th quarters. They just managed to hang on when Kane Murphy snapped the winning goal against the run of play. Byron Sumner did a great run-with job on ex-Swan Amon Buchanan while Daniel Currie was superb in a almost-lone hand in the ruck.
Goals: White 4, Murphy 2, Currie 2, Bevan 2, Moore, Johnston, Heath, Gordon, Sumner, Kruger
Best: Sumner, Currie, Bevan, McNeil, Parker, Brain
R21 Reserves 26.23 (179) defeated Brisbane Reserves 4.5 (29) @ Blacktown Olympic Park
A four quarter performance resulted in a demolishing of the depleted Lions Reserves. The Swans kicked the first 11 goals of the game before registered their first major and were never troubled. Trent Dennis-Lane continued his impressive form with another 6 goals while midfielders Brett Meredith (5) and Nathan Gordon & Kane Murphy (4) also notched multiple goals
Goals: Dennis-Lane 6, Meredith 5, Gordon 4, Murphy 4, Seaby 2, Bevan, Moore, Heath, Pyke
Best: Moore, Kruger, Meredith, McNeil, Gordon, Murphy

Last Round
Reserves 27.18 (180) defeated Sydney Hills Eagles 9.5 (59) @ ANZ Stadium
In the inaugural meeting between the two sides, the Reserves were switched on from the very start and put 8 majors on the scoreboard before the Eagles had their first. The Eagles were more competitive after quarter time but their defence had no answer for the triple threat forward line of Mitch Morton, Matt Spangher and Tommy Walsh. Jed Lamb and Jarred Moore controlled the midfield for the Swans who had excellent service from ruckman Jesse White.
Goals: Morton 6, Walsh 6, Spangher 5, Meredith 2, Lamb 2, White, Wray, Robinson, Plug, Cunningham, Sertbas
Best: Lamb, White, Walsh, Morton, Spangher, Moore
Brisbane Reserves 26.11 (167) defeated Redland 10.15 (75) @ Giffin Park
The Lions hammered the finals-bound Redland in impressive fashion including an amazing 12 goals to 1 third quarter which all but sealed the 4 points for Brisbane after the margin was a tight 9 points at half time. Aaron Cornelius rebounded from his senior demotion in style kicking 7 in another impressive marking display but it was half-forward James Hawksley who earnt BOG honours with his 4 goals and work rate around the half forward area.
Goals: Cornelius 7, Hawksley 4, Dyson 3, Fox 3, Fuller 2, Bewick 2, Newell 2, J.Stiller 2, Michael
Best: Hawksley, Lester, Dyson, J.Clarke, J.Stiller, Cornelius

7 | Brett MEREDITH | 14 | 7 | 17 | (Senior extended bench) His inlcusion in the seniors squad of 25 is just reward for a solid second half of the season. |
8 | Trent DENNIS-LANE | 9 | 30 | 28 | Impressive all-round performance in the R15 clash with the Lions. |
11 | Jed LAMB | 13 | 18 | 10 | His clearance work at the stoppages last week was most impressive. |
13 | Andrejs EVERITT | 5 | 4 | 3 | Unexplained late withdrawal from the seniors, likely to line up in the midfield. |
17 | Tommy WALSH | 15 | 26 | 26 | Returned to goalkicking form with a bag of 6, won't have it as easy this week against Brisbane's big defenders |
18 | Jesse WHITE | 12 | 25 | 18 | Continues to be the lone ruckman in Seaby's absence, and performing very well in this role. |
19 | Tony ARMSTRONG | 9 | 1 | 6 | (Senior extended bench) |
27 | Matthew SPANGHER | 10 | 26 | 17 | (Senior extended bench) His inclusion could depend on Reid's fitness, but he may be flown down to Melbourne in any case. |
28 | Dylan McNEIL | 17 | 7 | 8 | One whose spot for the finals looks shaky. |
33 | Jarred MOORE | 17 | 12 | 40 | Was dominant in the clearances but not as prominent in the forward half. |
35 | Campbell HEATH | 17 | 0 | 22 | Had his hands full with Cornelius and Lisle the last time these sides met. |
36 | Alex BROWN | 9 | 1 | 3 | |
42 | Jack LYNCH | 17 | 7 | 12 | Has grown into the key defensive post as the season has progressed and looks likely to be retained for 2013. |
43 | Eugene KRUGER | 10 | 1 | 0 | Finally has overcome hammy issues that has seen him miss the past 5 games. |
44 | Harry CUNNINGHAM | 16 | 11 | 16 | Midfield tagging role looms |
45 | Nathan GORDON | 12 | 25 | 9 | A defensive role last week may be reprised against Brisbane's talented on-ballers and half-forwards, especially if Meredith is required in Melbourne. |
Changes
In: Dennis-Lane (senior demotion), Everitt (???), Armstrong (senior extended bench), Kruger (hamstring)
Out: Mitch Morton (senior promotion)
3 to be omitted as the seniors bench (McGlynn named on the seniors interchange but not named in the reserves' squad) is finalised this afternoon. Pyke and Parker are certainties with the last spot to be decided between Armstrong, Spangher, Meredith and Morton. A further player will be taken down as the traveling emergency, and perhaps 2 will be required if the doubts over Reid's fitness are serious so the number of listed players could be as low as 15 when the side takes the field tomorrow afternoon.

The Swans had trouble containing the height of tall forwards Cornelius and Jordan Lisle in Round 15. To the relief of Heath and Lynch, Lisle has earnt a place in their senior side but replacing him in the reserves is the equally dangerous Patty Karnezis who may be not as tall as Lisle but is a proven goalkicker at NEAFL level. Hawksley was also a handful in Round 15, kicking 4 goals as an smaller forward. Former NSW scholarship holder Richard Newell will also be missed as he has performed a very important job as their forward tag, and was effective in this role against Brett Meredith in Round 15.
The omissions of Beams, Bewick and Newell will hurt the Lions midfield but they have called upon capable replacements in Buchanan and Banfield.
Their backline also looks very solid with the talls of McKeever, Michael and Justin Clarke complemented well by the smaller runners in Docherty, Wrigley and Wearden.
