    Open Mike - Steven Baker

Did anyone watch it? What a fascinating but uncomfortable half hour of viewing that was. Well done to Mike Sheehan for letting Baker's words tell the story rather than editorialising. Baker looked nervous but was extremely candid in talking about his tactics, his methods, his opinion on fellow players and coaches, the Tribunal etc. I didn't like him any more when it finished, in fact I probably liked him less, but I tip my cap to him for appearing on the show and talking like he did.

I did and it was very interesting.

The way he was "retired" by Lyon when Lyon knew he wasn't going to be coaching there the next year. Very poor on Lyon.

Baker played it very hard and was pretty much from the old school. Even he said he wouldn't have knocked an injured player if they were leaving the field.

At the end, as he said it is a man's game. History now.
Nothing like a good light bulb moment.

Will always remember him for refusing to shake Goodes' hand before the 2005 prelim final.

Agree that it was poor from Lyon.

In her piece on stomping, Caro refers to the interview and quotes Baker saying he used to "sharpen his stops" before a game. I saw him as a bit of a thug, but that is low.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

He openly admitted to doing that in the interview, staggering!

It was pretty candid stuff to talk about on TV and still feel OK about everything he stooped to. He only scored 2 or was it 3 Brownlow votes in his whole career, says it all really for me.
