Another wild assumption is the managers would know full version of events and more than happy to talk about player availability after dramatic overreaction towards their clients

They were suspended because they were partying all night on coke with strippers 2 weeks out from finals. Their suspension is independent from the police investigation and alleged SA.

No, my friend. The players brought this on themselves by their silly and selfish behavior just 2 weeks out from the finals. Broke club rules by being up until all hours and engaging in questionable behaviour- this is clear and irrelevant of the police report, which will deal with the alleged SA and has little to do with the club’s rules.

The players can show real character by genuine remorse and thus re-establishing trust with their teammates, our club and us. I’m confident they will do this and we will do our best to reintegrate them to our club for their benefit and ours.

However, this will change if charges are laid- so let’s hope this will not be the case!

Read my 60 posts, im saying it was over the top. I know he said it was independent of the alleged charges, he had to, as a week later there are still no charges laid.

I have little to add on this whole sorry business, except (1) I am so very disappointed, (2) I hope that the club does everything in its power to rebuild my trust and (3) once again, Jonathan Horn has written a belter of an article.

Its an okay article, not sure I'd call it a belter. He picks up some of the story well (i.e. reflects very well on the hero worship culture of modern sport and the broader emotions), but then over-fixates on other elements too much (Such as the walkout and lower crowd), and then makes sweeping generalisations that simply aren't true (yes what happens on the field is not of the importance it may have been, but it does still matter to many).

That is his writing too a tee normally though - some great salient points mixed in with a few shots that go out on the full.

I've been disappointed a bit by the Guardian's coverage more broadly - usually they are reasonably circumspect with balancing the need to report breaking headlines, with sticking to the facts and important parts of a story. They've been at the forefront of some quite misleading reporting across the last week, amplifying parts that tell us nothing more/not add to the known facts, in an apparent desperation to paint up just how bad it all is. It is below their usual standards imho - they aren't alone in that regard of course. They've had some good articles and some shockers over the past week.

And as someone who fits into the two demographic groups Horn identifies - a woman and an older person - I feel even less affiliation with what he wrote. I also am a regular reader of the Guardian. But I've been disappointed in recent months their seeming fall towards mirroring other 'populist' papers that want to put as key headlines things that don't really matter and aren't that important.

Yes what Dillon said is important, but its not a critical news article. Neither was the other day when the lawyer for one of the alleged victims starting sprouting everything and anything - not because he didn't have a right to do that, but because it was adding absolutely nothing to the discourse but some mud slinging for the sake of it.

Horn does better than most mainsteam footy writers at achieving a reasonable balance in most of his articles. But completely agree about the overt pathos in this article!
