Grundy - Forward

He played forward for the first 2 years or so, then I think in 2008 NAB Cup, his and Jesse's positions changed. Against Port Jesse had lined up on Tredrea for the first half and got beaten badly while Grundy had done nothing up forward. After half time, Jesse went forward and kicked a couple while Reg went down back and kept Tredrea out of the game.

Anyway, I'd like to see Reg pushed forward every now and then with such depth down back. Would allow LRT down back again where he plays best. I still think Reg is our best defender, but as a swing role that would make the other coach think, I think he has value going into the forward line.

I don't think so; he is too good a backman. Sure he had a dirty day on Saturday, but all backmen do at some point, and the box was slow to switch him around. We'll get plenty more good defence out of Reg.

Yes, he is a GREAT backman and I fully support him being there. However, at the moment we have a number of very good backmen and no full forward, so it is definitely worth a discussion. Some of the best backmen over recent years became good pinch-hitting forwards (Silvagni, Lake, Fletcher, etc) but really only when needed for shock value. In addition, I still hate the thought of Hunter from the Weagles moving into the forward line every game and killing us.
I really do think that it is something that we can keep up our sleeves to pull out as a shock.

Agreed - I discussed this with friends a month or so ago. I am all for it, except for the fact that Grundy is now part of a structure in the backline and has been playing there for so long that he has the understanding of his teammates down there. To move him out would disrupt our backs more than we suspect.
Having said that, he is a good mark and can use his body well and his shots for goal cant be any worse than what we have seen in the past few weeks (pies game aside).

I was of the opinion that a tough decision was going to be made between LRT - Grundy and Ted, based on the thought that White could hold down the FF position...eventually.

No more.

White seems to have worked hard in his ruck work and is still valuable to the team, creating a strong presence forward when not proving a chop out in the ruck. But a presence is all he will be. Like a scary ghost once someone puts a hand though his transparent veneer, the spell is broken.

Grundy is the best contested mark in the team (yes, better than Sam ATM).

He was drafted and tried as a forward without luck before finding his place in the backline.

He could easily join other backman who moved forward like Alister Lynch etc and provide a PERMANENT, STRONG marking option forward - with Ted and LRT holding down the key defensive posts.

Not a bad kick. Why not give it a go?
