How come some people on the thread think he may retire?

There seems to be a poster or two on here that thinks the minute a player turns 30 he should retire. Wonder what Dustin Fletcher and Brent Harvey think of that theory?

It would be seriously suicidial for the swans to let Mummy go and not at least get someone in as a back-up ruckman. To only have Pyke to be supported by White and Tippett is all well and good, but what if any of them are out for an extended period, especially Pyke? Naismith has promise but is nowhere near ready to go yet - it really would be like playing russian roulette hoping for no injuries (which this year has clearly shown doesn't happen too often).

Looking forward to what we can do in 2014 with hopefully a much closer to fit list. We do however need to tinker our game plan - you can see what every team is going to try and do against us next year after what Freo did to us on the weekend. We really struggle under the forward press.

He has had 2 very injury interrupted seasons Matt - it is understandable that he might consider throwing in the towel. But I strongly doubt it - I expect 2014 will probably be his last though. You only have to look at Bolton this season to see how quickly you can go from having a great influence on games to being on the margins of the best 22.

I agree on Goodes. He had a very limited pre season last year.

If he has a good, injury free, pre season....look out!

2014 could be a beauty especially with a fit Tippett, Rohan and Reid in the team.

Then of course there's LRT, Shaw, AJ, Mitchell.

And finally another pre season into, Lamb, Biggs, Cunningham, BJ, etc etc.

We don't need much of a revamp, just a re boot.

Great effort by the Swans! The amount of injuries that we have had this year, and to finish one game short... Excellent really. Yes we got spanked, however there are at least 10 other sides that would love to be in our position.. Finished top 4 and a heap of young players now have finals experience.
With luck we will get a few players back next year. Hopefully our injuries will be limited and we can give a tilt next year..

Couple of players to change, however the core will be as solid as the last few years.

Rebuilding after finishing fourth with half our senior team out and after winning a premiership last year? Get real people! We don't rebuild, we refresh and a lot of that happened this year due to injury. Most teams revamp their teams by going to the bottom. We revamp the team and play in a preliminary final at the same time. This season may go down as a greater effort than either of our premiership years of late due to the players we lost due to injury.

Mummy and Pyke

Earlier in the year most of us were saying that Pyke was our no. 1 ruckman. Mummy came back strongly after his broken jaw and Mummy, Pyke and Tippett all played well together. I've been watching the work of Mummy and Pyke more closely over the past few weeks and feel that Pyke is actually the more effective ruckman. Mummy gets in the rough and tumble of things and does help the mids out in tackling and providing a big body inside. But overall it didn't seem to add any particular advantage to us when the dust settled. The other team seem to end up the ball at least half the time anyway. Pyke was actually better at directing the ball to one of our players. Mummy tries to make a contest and get a hitout, but more often than not, it goes to the other team. It was not just against Sandi but against Max Bailey as well. He's got a big tank and runs around a lot, but doesn't make that big impact around the ground.

I think we'd be better served with another strong running midfielder instead of having 2 main ruckmen and just leave the main ruckwork to Pyke with Tippett and White chipping in. I think you can only play 2 legit ruckmen if they of a very special type. Sandilands and Clarke of Freo along with Cox and NicNat are the only combinations that fit the bill IMO. Mummy and Pyke, although both fine ruckmen with much to offer, don't have the combination of athleticism and ruck domination of the Perth pairs.

I want to be clear. If we didn't have Pyke, I would fight tooth and claw to keep Mummy. But I feel we would eventually end up playing only one at a time next year anyway, as we find a more effective team balance with a different combination of players.

I think it would best for both Mummy and the Swans if we can get a good trade for him with all parties happy, even if it means that he goes to Hawthorn or Collingwood.

I don't think we are thin in the ruck department. Tippett and White are both decent ruckmen. Naismith is looking a good young prospect and who knows what will be with American recruit Patrick Mitchell (although it's unrealistic that he would provide anything next year). If need be, there are lots of solid ruckmen that can be recruited as rookies for a year if we feel we need additional cover; Mark Seaby and even Jolly to name a couple.
