After he retires, I expect the medal for Goal of the Year will be named after him.

Seems like a brilliant bloke and he’s a joy to watch on the football field. I was saying how amazing his goal was at home.

Agree. So is the call of touched. There were at least three cases when the ball was called touched and the player didn't clearly hear it - Luke Parker's was the most obvious. Imagine if that was in the noise of a GF.

At least the umpires evened up the HTB against Parker with one the other way.

Does he ever not? Like, Dane’s rare hair off days are A- at worst. Most other players just look on in a combination of askance and envy.

It's funny you mention this - I took two total newbs to the footy with me yesterday - they are Mariners members and had never seen an AFL game live or on tv. Apart from the hilarity that ensued from the actually genuine questions of "Why is the score 117?" (it was 1.1.7 ) and calls for players to be given a red card, they couldn't believe the amount of whistle-blowing that went on. At one time, it was commented "Oh, that 'ref' hasn't had attention in a while and had to blow his whistle". I'd previously tuned it out, but after that comment it drove me nuts how often the whistle was blown for the rest of the game.

Yes, about the only time that I ever really noticed, just how incessantly umpires blow their whistles to award marks, was when I sat my young niece down to watch a game with me. Until she walked off because the whistling was driving her crazy, she was constantly asking why they were blowing their whistles and I was constantly replying that it was because it was a mark.

Which is sort of interesting. If I can see that it's a mark, I pretty well never consciously hear the whistle, but if a whistle is blown when there isn't a mark, the whistling immediately enters my consciousness.

Talking of touched, Buddy's kick to Isaac on the edge of the square was about 13.5 metres. No commentator made any comment about the length of the kick.

Enjoyed our day out at the footy. Got there early for the pre-match ceremonies. I found them quite moving and thought they were very well done. Held the kids' attention too.

As to the game, close enough to be interesting without causing too much stress, we know Carlton just can't go for 4 quarters. For the Blues McKay was good - just outsized all our defenders. Also Cripps, and have to admit I enjoy watching Eddie Betts. Scored one of his trademark "impossible angle" goals right in front of us.

Heeney was excellent and Buddy out-muscling 2 defenders for a goal was good to watch too. Tough day for McCartin but kept at it to his credit and still managed a few good strong marks. In fact I thought most of the players who were a bit "down" kept their heads up and toiled away.
